A tsunami warning sends the Odyssey racing for safer water while Max is stranded ashore, turning the episode into two cliffhangers at once: will Max survive, and can the crisis repair what his declaration has fractured between him, Avery and Tristan? The disaster tests their ties, but it does not settle them.
What happens in “The Wave”?
“The Wave” is the penultimate episode of Doctor Odyssey’s first season. It begins in the aftermath of Max’s declaration to Avery, which has left their relationship fractured. Max leaves the ship, then an earthquake strikes and brings a tsunami warning. The Odyssey must leave port for deeper water, separating Max from the people aboard as he tries to get back. ITVX’s episode synopsis frames the emergency alongside the tension between Max and Avery.
Max stays to help on land
The earthquake injures a guest ashore. Max helps him and others move toward higher ground, even as the ship has to get away from the coast. When waves begin battering the shoreline, the Odyssey is tossed about and passengers are put in danger. Max’s choice to remain with people on land runs directly against the captain’s immediate priority: getting the ship into safer water. TVLine’s May 8, 2025 recap details the parallel danger on shore and at sea.
A call from Avery is cut short
Max later heads back toward the shoreline to look for people who may still need help. He and Barry, a talkative father and coroner, meet a local shopkeeper who dies from his injuries. Meanwhile, Avery calls Max for vocal guidance during an emergency surgery. Their conversation is interrupted by an aftershock—and the church where Max is sheltering collapses around him.

Does Max survive the church collapse?
The episode does not reveal whether Max makes it out. The collapse leaves him buried or trapped, with his fate uncertain as the hour ends. Aboard the Odyssey, the captain plans to return toward shore when it is safe. That intention offers a possible route back to Max, not confirmation that he will be found. The survival question carries directly into the season finale.
Does the tsunami resolve Max, Avery and Tristan’s relationship?
No. Max’s declaration has damaged his relationship with Avery, and Tristan remains part of the romantic tension, but the episode does not show the three choosing a lasting relationship structure. The tsunami raises the emotional stakes by forcing separation and making Max’s safety urgent; it does not answer the relationship question.

The episode’s two uncertainties work differently. The disaster demands immediate decisions: Max stays to help people, while the captain moves the ship away from danger. The romantic conflict remains unsettled beneath those choices. “The Wave” uses the emergency to intensify the triangle rather than resolve it.
