Robert Downey Jr. is a persuasive—but not yet proven—choice to play Victor von Doom. Marvel’s case rests on his willingness to take on difficult, layered roles and the Russo brothers’ confidence that he can make the character compelling. The challenge is equally clear: after playing Tony Stark in 10 films, Downey must make Doom feel like his own character, not Stark in a mask.
Why Marvel chose Downey for Doctor Doom
Marvel announced Downey’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024. Joe Russo framed the decision in deliberately emphatic terms: “If we’re gonna bring Victor Von Doom to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we’re going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character.” That is the director’s endorsement, not independent proof that the casting will work. Disney’s announcement also reported Downey’s own explanation: “What can I tell you? I like playing complicated character.”
A role designed to push an actor
Anthony Russo compared the casting challenge with asking Downey to play Tony Stark as an antagonist in Captain America: Civil War. Stark was not simply a villain in that film, but he occupied an opposing position—a useful example of Downey working within a complicated moral conflict. Russo said, “It was a very scary idea to a lot of people that we would sort of put that character in a position of being considered the bad guy.” He also described Downey as an actor who welcomes difficulty: “Robert is brave. He likes to be surprised, he likes to be pushed into difficult places.” Marvel’s interview with Anthony Russo makes the argument about creative appetite, not a guarantee of the finished performance.
A return that is meant to move forward
Downey later recalled that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige raised Doom as a way to return without simply repeating the past. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, as reported by The Credits, Downey said he looked into the character and wanted to get him right: “Let’s get Victor von Doom right. Let’s get that right.” His account explains the appeal of the project to him; it does not reveal how the film’s plot connects Doom to Stark.

The central challenge: Downey is already Tony Stark to many viewers
Downey played Tony Stark/Iron Man in 10 films, according to Disney’s March 2025 cast announcement. That familiarity gives Marvel an instantly recognizable casting choice, but it also raises the bar for transformation. Viewers will bring memories of Stark’s voice, humor, relationships and story to a new character who must stand apart from them.
Marvel has not explained whether or how Doom’s familiar face connects to Stark in the story. Asked about a possible connection, Anthony Russo said, “Everything is best left for the theater.” Until the film provides an answer, it would be speculation to call Doom a Tony Stark variant, a resurrected Tony or an Iron Man villain in Doom’s armor.

What the casting has to prove on screen
The case for Downey is that he can bring presence and complexity to a demanding role, and that the directors believe he welcomes being challenged. The case against treating the choice as settled is that enthusiasm and reputation cannot show whether the performance will make Victor von Doom distinct. The film needs to establish Doom on his own terms—rather than relying on audience recognition of the actor to do the work of characterization.
That burden matters especially in an ensemble crossover. The Associated Press’s production coverage describes a multi-universe ensemble, a setting in which the central antagonist needs to command attention amid many characters. That context makes Downey’s star power useful, but the film still has to give Doom a clear identity and purpose.

When will Avengers: Doomsday be released?
Disney’s current Avengers: Doomsday film page lists a release date of December 18, 2026. An earlier Disney announcement dated March 26, 2025 listed May 1, 2026; the current film page has since superseded that date. The Russo brothers are also returning to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, according to the earlier announcement.
