Usually, YouTube can preserve live chat alongside an archived livestream, but a loop-streaming service does not automatically guarantee that its chat—or messages it relays—will appear in that replay. YouTube says chat replay is enabled by default for eligible stream archives. Check the video’s setting and the service’s specific chat behavior to know what viewers will actually see.
What YouTube chat replay preserves
Live chat replay appears alongside an archived livestream and shows the chat as it appeared while the stream was live. YouTube says the feature is on by default, but a creator can turn it off in the live video’s customization settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube may also turn off live chat when a stream or its chat violates Community Guidelines. YouTube Help: Manage live chat
Chat replay is not the same as comments below a video. It is a replay of the live chat associated with the archived broadcast. YouTube’s announcement described it as appearing alongside the video, “exactly as it appeared live.” YouTube, February 26, 2018
Why a loop service may not preserve every message
A loop-streaming service sends prerecorded video as a live broadcast. Some services also provide a chat interface or relay messages between platforms. Those functions do not, by themselves, establish that every message will be recorded in YouTube’s archive. YouTube’s replay setting governs YouTube chat replay; a vendor’s live chat or relay behavior is a separate matter.

For example, Restream documents prerecorded streams that can loop a video up to 10 times, with a maximum 40-hour stream when looping; its help article describes looping as a paid feature. It also documents prerecorded events with real-time chat and a relay bot that can repost messages between platforms. The reviewed documentation does not explicitly guarantee that these messages will be retained in YouTube’s archived chat replay. Do not assume that chat restarts or repeats each time a video loops. Confirm that behavior with the service if it matters to your event.

How to check the replay after a stream
- Open the archived stream on its YouTube watch page. Live chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. A channel may post the replay after a stream ends. YouTube Help: Stream with Live Control Room
- Check the video’s live chat replay setting. In YouTube Studio, open the archived live video’s customization settings and confirm that live chat replay is enabled. The setting can be turned off. YouTube Help: Manage live chat
- Check whether the archive was edited in YouTube’s video editor. YouTube says streams edited there will not have chat replay. YouTube Help: Use live chat
- Ask the loop-service provider what its chat feature does. Find out whether messages are sent as YouTube live chat, displayed only in the service’s dashboard, or relayed from elsewhere—and whether the provider explicitly documents that they appear in YouTube’s resulting archive.
