What does the game confirm about Blackwater?
Rockstar’s official synopsis says that a robbery in the western town of Blackwater “goes badly wrong,” forcing Arthur Morgan and the gang to flee. The Rockstar Games listing for Red Dead Redemption 2 presents that as the setup for the story, rather than giving a full account of the crime.
A PlayStation Blog overview published October 1, 2018 adds that the robbery was bloody and that the law chased the gang east into the Grizzly Mountains. Together, these official descriptions establish the broad consequence: the job failed, deaths followed, and the gang had to escape.
Do you see the robbery happen?
No. The playable story opens in the aftermath, not during the Blackwater incident. Arthur was not present for the robbery, and the story does not give players a direct scene of it. You hear about Blackwater through the situation the gang is in and what characters say, rather than witnessing an authoritative, complete reconstruction.

Why is there no complete explanation?
The official summaries establish the failed robbery and the flight that follows, but they do not lay out a step-by-step sequence or settle the precise cause of the failure. Character accounts are part of the story, but they should not automatically be treated as an omniscient account of every detail. Claims about exactly how the robbery unfolded or each person’s role go beyond what these summaries confirm.
A secondary answer page reproducing a Screen Rant response also says the event is never directly experienced because Arthur was absent. That supports the distinction between learning the outline and seeing the event, but it is not a primary source for additional lore.
