Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion bride is now presented as a ghost mourning lost husbands—not simply as the axe-wielding killer associated with the ride’s earlier Constance story. Imagineering creative director Kim Irvine described the January 2025 scene as a move back toward a lost bride and a mood of sadness and lost love. Disney’s official description details the new scene’s visuals, but does not name the bride or settle what happened to her husbands.
What changed in the Haunted Mansion attic?
Disneyland introduced the redesigned attic bride in January 2025. Disney’s official fact sheet describes a ghostly bride who appears to float, with a flowing gown, a red beating heart guests can see and hear, and a familiar candelabra. The scene brings back the beating-heart image while changing the emotional emphasis of the encounter.
In a January 17, 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Irvine said Imagineering wanted to move “back a little bit” toward an earlier idea of a bride mourning her husbands. She described the intended feeling as sadness and lost love, a contrast with the axe-murderer framing of the previous scene.
How the new mood differs from Constance
Disney’s earlier account of Constance presents a far more explicit black-widow story. In its profile of Haunted Mansion ghosts, Disney says she had five husbands. Pearls marked her marriages, and the attic scene showed her with memories of those marriages and an axe.

| Story element | Earlier Constance presentation | January 2025 attic scene |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional framing | Sinister black widow, with an axe and a record of five husbands, according to Disney’s earlier character account. | Mourning and lost love, the direction Irvine described to the Los Angeles Times. |
| Visual clues | Pearls, marriage portraits and an axe, as described by Disney. | A floating appearance, flowing gown, red beating heart and candelabra, as described in Disney’s fact sheet. |
| Name and full backstory | Disney identifies the character as Constance and describes her five marriages. | Disney’s 2025 fact sheet does not name the bride or explain the husbands’ fate. |
The shift is best understood as a change in the scene’s presentation and emotional framing—not as a documented, complete replacement biography. Irvine’s remarks support a return toward a tragic lost-bride idea, but the official 2025 description does not say whether the bride remains Constance or provide a new account of the marriages.
Is the new bride still Constance?
Disney’s official 2025 fact sheet does not identify the bride by name. Disney’s earlier account explicitly calls the axe-bearing, five-husband character Constance, but the new description does not confirm that the redesigned bride retains that name, nor does it announce that the character has been renamed. The available official material therefore leaves the question open.

- DIMENSIONS: 1.77" L x 1.77" W x 3.5" H
That distinction matters: a change in tone does not, by itself, establish a canon reset. Irvine’s explanation points to a more mournful interpretation; it does not specify whether the husbands died, how they died, or whether the new scene is meant to resolve the details of Constance’s story.
Why older Haunted Mansion stories can be confusing
The bride’s earlier story should also be kept separate from the attraction’s earliest proposed concepts. In early 1957, Walt Disney asked Imagineer and story artist Ken Anderson to develop a haunted-house experience. One concept, preserved by the Walt Disney Archives and recounted by D23, featured Captain Bartholomew Gore, his bride Priscilla, and Gore’s secret identity as the pirate Black Bart. That is part of the attraction’s development history, not confirmation of the current bride’s story.

Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion opened on August 9, 1969. Disney’s account of the opening and its descriptions of the attraction place the attic bride within a larger ghostly tour that includes Madame Leota’s séance, the ballroom and the graveyard. The 2025 change concerns Disneyland’s attic scene; it should not be assumed to describe every Haunted Mansion attraction.

The most solid takeaway is an intended shift in feeling. The new scene restores recognizable bride imagery—a beating heart and candelabra—and adds a floating, flowing appearance. Irvine’s comments frame the bride as mourning her husbands, while Disney’s public description stops short of confirming a name or a definitive fate for them.

So the “surprising new backstory” is less a fully spelled-out plot twist than a return toward tragedy: the bride is meant to evoke grief and lost love rather than simply menace. The unanswered details are part of what makes the new presentation more ambiguous than the earlier Constance story.
