Disney’s planned adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book was reported paused in September 2024, not confirmed canceled. The Associated Press still described it as paused in January 2025, but the available reporting does not establish the project’s status as of October 8, 2026.
Was Disney’s The Graveyard Book movie canceled?
No cancellation has been confirmed in the available reporting. Variety reported on September 5, 2024 that Disney had put the adaptation on pause. The Associated Press described it as paused on January 27, 2025, the latest dated project-status report among the sources cited here. Neither report establishes what Disney has decided since then, so “canceled,” “restarted” or “still paused” should not be treated as a confirmed current status.
Why was the film paused?
Variety reported that the allegations against Gaiman were one of several factors in Disney’s decision. Its report said the film had not entered pre-production and had no confirmed cast at that time. The Guardian reported on September 13, 2024, that development was on hold, while cautioning that streaming services had not confirmed that their project decisions were caused by the allegations. No on-record Disney explanation for the pause appears in these reports, so the causal account remains attributed to reporting rather than a confirmed statement from the company.
What has been reported about the allegations?
The Boston Globe reported that five women made claims described in Tortoise Media’s six-episode podcast. The Globe also reported that Gaiman strongly denied the claims through an attorney. The accounts and circumstances differ; they should not be compressed into a single allegation or described as proven. The cited reporting does not establish a legal finding.

In a statement published January 14, 2025, Gaiman wrote, “I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.” He also acknowledged, “I was emotionally unavailable while being sexually available, self-focused and not as thoughtful as I could or should have been.” On February 2, 2026, he wrote on his official site, “The allegations against me are completely and simply untrue.” These are Gaiman’s statements and reflect his position; they are not independent findings. His 2025 statement is available on his official site, as is his February 2026 statement.

Gaiman’s novel follows Bod, the only living resident of a graveyard, who is raised from infancy by ghosts, werewolves and other cemetery inhabitants. The book is the source material for the planned adaptation; its story can be read independently of the film’s uncertain status. Gaiman’s official book listing includes a trade paperback edition, ISBN 9780063089686.
