The mocked digital crowd appears in a basketball scene from Disney’s 2023 teen comedy Prom Pact. Contemporary coverage identified the figures as CGI, not verified AI-generated actors or scanned likenesses of real performers. The clip resurfaced during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which gave the scene a labor-replacement context—but did not establish that the film used AI or performer scans.
What is the Disney CGI crowd scene?
The scene is from Prom Pact, released on March 30, 2023. In a basketball sequence, a row of digital figures sits behind the human performers. Viewers mocked the figures for their stiff, conspicuous appearance and movement. ( Know Your Meme )
The scene drew some ridicule around the film’s release, then resurfaced on social media on October 12, 2023. Futurism covered the renewed attention the next day, with other explainers following over the next several days. ( Futurism )
Were the figures AI-generated actors?
Contemporaneous reporting described them as CGI or 3D digital models—not as verified AI-generated actors. UPROXX, citing The Hollywood Reporter, described the figures as CGI creations by visual-effects artists. We Got This Covered similarly reported, attributing the information to The Hollywood Reporter, that they were CGI and not scans of real human actors. ( UPROXX ; We Got This Covered )

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those labels are not interchangeable. CGI means computer-generated imagery; it can include digital figures made for a scene without implying that an AI system generated them or that they reproduce a particular performer. A scan or digital replica of a real person raises a different question: whose likeness is being reproduced and under what terms? The coverage of this scene supports the CGI description, not the stronger claims that it proves AI replaced actors or that Disney used scanned performers.
Why did the clip become part of the SAG-AFTRA strike conversation?
The clip went viral again while actors were on strike in October 2023. Digital replication of performers’ voices and likenesses was a major labor issue, so some viewers treated the conspicuous digital crowd as an illustration of fears about replacing background performers. Futurism reported on a proposal discussed in negotiations that involved scanning background performers and using those scans. That broader dispute explains the reaction to the clip; it does not show that Prom Pact used such scans. ( Futurism )

Freelance writer Christopher Marc captured the reaction in a post quoted by Futurism: “Noticed it’s a whole row of AI actors. Yikes!” That was a viewer’s description, not a verified technical account of how the figures were made.
Why did Disney use CGI for the scene?
The contemporaneous coverage does not establish Disney’s reason for choosing CGI, and Know Your Meme reported that Disney had not commented. A suggestion that the choice reflected a gap between human players and extras is speculation, not a confirmed production explanation. There is no basis in these accounts for treating cost, scheduling, or a deliberate replacement strategy as the established reason.

What the scene does—and does not—show
- It shows: a visibly artificial CGI crowd in a basketball scene in Prom Pact.
- It does not establish: that the figures were AI-generated, based on scans of real performers, or evidence of Disney’s production rationale.
- Its strike-era significance: the clip became a prompt for wider concerns about digital replicas and background performers, a debate separate from what is known about this particular crowd.
The clarification comes from reporting published October 13–16, 2023; it is not a newer statement from Disney or the film’s visual-effects team. No present-day streaming availability is established here.
