In Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 comparison of wide releases, Universal led worldwide box office, while Disney did not. At the individual-film level, the European Audiovisual Observatory’s ranking of films released in 2023 puts Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 fourth, behind Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer. Those are related but different measures: a studio’s combined releases are not the same as the gross of its biggest film.
Which studio led the 2023 worldwide box office?
Rotten Tomatoes’ year-end comparison says Universal had the highest box-office total among wide releases, with more than $2.5 billion, and led both its domestic and worldwide comparisons. Its result included hits such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer, as well as Fast X, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Trolls Band Together, M3GAN and The Exorcist: Believer. The figure is specific to Rotten Tomatoes’ wide-release comparison; it should not be treated as a universal final ledger of every film attributed to each studio. Rotten Tomatoes’ studio comparison does not establish a precise, directly comparable margin between Universal and Disney.
What were the biggest individual films of 2023?
The European Audiovisual Observatory’s FOCUS 2024: World Film Market Trends ranks films released in 2023 by worldwide gross. Its estimates are in U.S. dollars and cumulative as of January 1, 2024, drawing on The Numbers and LUMIERE/OBS. The first three were Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer; Disney’s highest-ranked film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, was fourth. The Observatory’s FOCUS 2024 report also lists Disney releases including The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Marvels and Wish further down its top 50.
A separate, currently consulted Box Office Mojo calendar-year table gives these individual-film worldwide totals. These are database figures, not studio-wide totals; the table may reflect later updates than the Observatory’s January 1 estimates.

#1 Best Overall
| 2023 film | Worldwide gross in Box Office Mojo’s currently consulted table |
|---|---|
| Barbie | $1,447,138,421 |
| The Super Mario Bros. Movie | $1,360,783,214 |
| Oppenheimer | $975,811,333 |
| Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | $845,555,777 |
These values were consulted in 2026 from Box Office Mojo’s 2023 Worldwide Box Office table. The Associated Press reported Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at $845.6 million worldwide in its December 27, 2023 account, a contemporaneous rounded figure rather than the same later database snapshot. The AP’s year-end analysis also placed the three films ahead of it at the top and discussed changing audience tastes.

Not by itself. Rotten Tomatoes’ comparison gives Walt Disney Studios the highest average box office per wide release, at more than $175 million, even though Universal led in aggregate wide-release totals. It highlights Disney releases including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Elemental. An average per release and a combined studio total answer different questions, so neither should be substituted for the other.
Rank #2
The AP’s December 2023 coverage described superhero dominance as less assured after the year’s results, but cautioned against declaring the genre dead. Disney’s fourth-place film ranking and Universal’s aggregate lead support the narrower claim that Disney lost the top position in these comparisons—not that every Disney release failed or that one year proves a lasting audience shift.

Why box-office rankings can differ
- Film versus studio: a film-level list ranks each title; a studio comparison combines multiple wide releases.
- Cutoff date: the Observatory’s figures are estimates cumulative as of January 1, 2024, whereas Box Office Mojo’s currently consulted table may contain updated values.
- Attribution and scope: sources can differ in how they count wide releases and assign distribution labels. Rotten Tomatoes’ $2.5+ billion figure belongs to its own wide-release comparison, not an all-purpose total.
- Calendar year versus fiscal year: Disney’s fiscal reporting is not interchangeable with a calendar-year ranking of films. Its fiscal 2023 earnings webcast materials provide company reporting context, not a substitute for worldwide theatrical box-office comparisons.
