It was a Disney and Pixar character-based RPG built around five-hero teams—but it is no longer playable: its servers shut down on May 31, 2026.
What was Disney Heroes: Battle Mode?
Disney Heroes: Battle Mode was a mobile role-playing game and hero battler developed by Disney and PerBlue. Its premise brought characters from Disney and Pixar into an original digital world threatened by a virus. The 2018 launch announcement described characters from franchises including The Incredibles, Wreck-It Ralph and Pirates of the Caribbean appearing together.
Disney vice president of Games Lisa Anderson described the concept as bringing “Disney and Pixar characters in an all-new, original universe.” PerBlue CEO Justin Beck said the partnership would bring recognizable characters and brands together in a new universe. The game was announced for iOS and Android; pre-registration began on Google Play, with App Store and Google Play availability planned later in 2018. GamesBeat’s April 2018 report framed it as the first game from Disney’s rebooted mobile strategy, while a republication of the Disney and PerBlue announcement called it the first game the companies had developed together since announcing their deal.
That “first game” description is specific to the strategy and partnership announced in 2018. It does not mean Disney had never released a mobile game before.

How was the game supposed to work?
The advertised play centered on building teams of five heroes and sending them into battles and missions. Players could use character abilities, level up heroes and equip gear. The announcement also described friend campaigns, with the broader story set in a digital world under threat from a virus. These are the systems presented at launch, not a description of a game that can still be accessed today.
What happened after launch?
PerBlue’s official history page reports that Disney Heroes: Battle Mode reached 15 million players within a year of launch. In 2020, the publisher reported 30 million players and the release of the game’s 100th hero. PerBlue also lists 6.9 billion battles as a lifetime figure on its company page; that is a publisher-reported total, not an independently audited statistic. PerBlue’s history page records the player milestones, while its company page gives the battle total.

Is Disney Heroes: Battle Mode still playable?
No. PerBlue’s official shutdown notice scheduled storefront removal and the end of real-money in-app purchases for April 30, 2026. Previously installed copies could continue running until the servers shut down on May 31, 2026. Both dates have passed, so the game is no longer officially playable or available as an operating service.
PerBlue’s closing message thanked the community: “From all of us at PerBlue, thank you for being part of this community.” The notice is signed by the Disney Heroes: Battle Mode Development Team.

Why did Disney Heroes shut down?
PerBlue’s shutdown notice gives the removal, purchase-disablement and server-closure dates, but does not state why the decision was made. Without an official explanation in that notice, claims about the business or operational reasons would be speculation.
