In February 2021, Disney’s plan to bring Hulu-associated programming to Canada was to add some of it to Star, an adult-oriented entertainment hub inside Disney+, not to launch a separate Canadian Hulu app. Disney later replaced the Star brand with Hulu on Disney+ in international markets, but that name change does not mean the full U.S. Hulu service or catalogue is available in Canada.
What the 2021 interview was about
On February 22, 2021, MobileSyrup’s Bradly Shankar interviewed Greg Mason, then vice president of marketing for Walt Disney Studios Canada, ahead of Star’s Canadian launch the following day. Mason described Star as Disney+’s locally relevant general-entertainment hub, bringing together programming from 20th Century Studios, 20th Television, Searchlight Pictures and Hulu, as well as Star Originals. He said Canada had a substantial catalogue at launch and that more programming was planned; those were his characterizations, not an independently measured comparison with another country’s catalogue.

Launch-era examples named in the interview included Family Guy, The X-Files, Criminal Minds, 24, Logan, Die Hard, Alien and The Predator. The article also noted that profile PIN settings could help prevent children from viewing mature material. These examples describe the 2021 launch context, not a guarantee that each title is available in Canada now. Read the interview at MobileSyrup.
Was Hulu available in Canada?
Not as a separate Canadian app in the arrangement Mason discussed. “Hulu” referred to programming and a brand associated with Disney’s U.S. general-entertainment service; Canadian viewers were to access some of that programming through Star inside Disney+. A Canadian Star hub and the U.S. Hulu service were not the same product, and the interview did not promise equivalent catalogues.

Disney announced on October 2, 2025 that Hulu would replace Star as the general-entertainment brand on Disney+ in international markets beginning October 8, 2025. The Walt Disney Company described Hulu as becoming “the global General Entertainment brand on Disney+, replacing Star in international markets.” That is a change to the name of the international Disney+ hub, not evidence that the standalone U.S. Hulu service or all of its titles are licensed for Canada. Why some Hulu-associated titles were on other Canadian services
Canadian streaming rights varied by title. Mason said Disney would honor existing agreements with Canadian broadcasters and providers: “We continue to respect our deals with our Canadian broadcasters and providers.” A contemporaneous MobileSyrup report cited Palm Springs on Amazon Prime Video and The Handmaid’s Tale on Crave as examples of titles then tied to other services. The interview also cautioned against assuming a single release pattern for older catalogue films. Mason pointed to Nomadland and its planned theatrical and streaming rollout as an example of a title-specific strategy. In practice, a program’s association with Hulu did not by itself settle its Canadian streaming destination or timing.
What Disney said about Star Originals
Mason described a longer-term aim for Star Originals to premiere in Canada, but presented it as an intention rather than a list of completed commissions. He said: “But from a longer-term perspective, we are aiming for Star Originals that will come out here.” He also described several possible relationships between the brands: “Some could be Hulu Originals, some could be Hulu and Star, some could be Star’s that show up on Hulu — there could be different derivatives.”

Those comments indicate that Disney was considering how originals might move among Hulu and Star. They do not establish that every intended title reached Canada, or that a particular project was commissioned or released as a result.

Mason also discussed creating Canadian content and increasing Canadian representation. A later Canadian Heritage committee transcript records Disney representative David Fares saying a Canadian programming strategy was then being developed. That testimony documents a strategy-in-development statement at that hearing; it does not establish the present status of the strategy or provide a complete list of Canadian Disney+ productions. The available statements therefore support a historical account of Disney’s stated ambitions, not a verdict that the company fulfilled or abandoned them. Establishing current results would require an authoritative, current record of commissioned or released Canadian productions.

How to read the interview today
- For the 2021 strategy: Star was an entertainment section within Disney+ Canada, and Hulu-related programming was one part of its offer.
- For rights and availability: existing Canadian licensing agreements could keep individual titles on other services, so neither a Hulu connection nor a Star launch guaranteed a specific Canadian home.
- For the current brand: Disney’s 2025 announcement renamed the international Disney+ general-entertainment hub Hulu; it did not announce a Canadian launch of the standalone U.S. Hulu service.
- For Canadian production: Mason’s comments and the later testimony are evidence of stated plans at particular times, not proof of a complete present-day production slate.
