Disney+ Error Code 39 means the service cannot authorize the selected content for your account. Disney says the cause may be the subscription plan, profile content-rating settings, or an unsupported device or configuration. First check the title and profile, then try the same title on another supported device. If playback fails only on a TV connected through other HDMI equipment, investigate that setup too—but HDMI/HDCP is a possible device-specific cause, not Disney’s official universal definition of Error 39.
What Disney+ Error Code 39 means
Disney’s current Error Code 39 message is: “Sorry, this content is not authorized for your account.” The wording does not by itself mean your account is fraudulent, canceled, or permanently blocked. It means Disney+ is not authorizing playback in the circumstances of that attempt. Those circumstances can involve the account session, the plan, the selected profile’s content limits, or the device and playback configuration. Disney’s Error Code 39 guidance identifies plan or content-rating restrictions and unsupported devices or configurations as possible causes.
It is not best treated as a generic Wi-Fi error. Disney lists Error Code 42 separately for connection problems, and Error Code 73 separately for content unavailable in the current location. If location appears relevant, check the specific code and Disney’s error-code index rather than assuming geography explains Error 39.
Start with the fastest checks
- Try another title. This helps establish whether the problem is limited to one movie or episode.
- Try an appropriate profile. If the title fails only on a child or restricted profile, review that profile’s content-rating setting. Change it only if the account owner intends to allow the content.
- Verify the account and plan. Make sure you are signed in to the intended account, the subscription is active, and the title is available under that plan. Do not assume that every title requires a particular tier; availability depends on the title and subscription.
- Sign out and back in. Sign out on the affected device, fully close Disney+, reopen it, sign in to the correct account, select the intended profile, and try again. This is especially useful after an account or plan change, a password change, or a long period without using the app.
- Relaunch or refresh. Close and reopen the app, or refresh DisneyPlus.com in your browser. Start playback again from the title page and, if needed, retry after a few minutes. Disney specifically recommends relaunching or refreshing and trying again.
- Test the same title elsewhere. Keep the same account and profile, but try a supported phone, tablet, or computer. This is the most useful low-cost way to distinguish an account or title issue from a problem local to the TV or device.
- Update the app and device. Install available Disney+ app and operating-system updates, and use a currently supported device or browser configuration. Disney’s subscriber agreement says compatible devices and software are required and points customers to the applicable Help Center for supported devices, operating systems, and browsers.
- Restart the device. Use its restart command where available. If the problem involves a TV connection, restart the TV as well as the streaming device.
- Reinstall only after the earlier checks. If the issue persists on one device, sign out if possible, remove the official Disney+ app, restart the device, reinstall from its app store, and sign in again. Reinstallation is a general recovery step; Disney’s Error 39 page does not list it as a primary code-specific fix.
- Contact Disney+ support if the account, profile, and supported-device checks do not resolve it.
Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause
The patterns below are diagnostic clues, not Disney’s official classification of each scenario.
#1 Best Overall
| What fails | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| One title on one profile | Check the profile’s content-rating limit, plan and title availability, then consider a title-specific authorization problem. |
| One title on every profile and device | Check whether the title is available under the plan and whether the account can authorize it; Disney support can investigate if those checks look right. |
| Every title on one TV or streaming device | Focus on device support, app or software state, a restart, and—if connected by HDMI—the display chain. |
| Only one profile fails | Review that profile’s content-rating setting and account authorization. |
| Playback works on a phone or computer but not on the TV | Focus on the TV app, streaming device, software, HDMI cable and connected equipment. |
| Playback works on the TV but not in a browser | Check that the browser and computer configuration are supported, then refresh the site and sign in again. |
Check the plan, profile, and sign-in
Confirm title availability under your plan
Disney recommends checking that the video is available with your plan type. Verify that you are using the intended account, that its subscription is active, and that the title is included in that subscription. A title’s availability can depend on the plan and market; Error 39 alone is not proof that you need to upgrade.
Review the profile’s content rating
Open the account or profile settings, select the affected profile, and review its content-rating or parental-control setting. Menu labels vary by country, device, app version, and account design, so use the controls shown in your Disney+ app rather than relying on a universal menu path. If the profile is restricted, you can test the title on an authorized adult profile. Raise the permitted rating only if the account owner wants that profile to access the content.
Refresh the account session
Signing out, closing the app completely, reopening it, and signing back in can refresh which account and profile the device is using. Confirm the selected profile before retrying the title.
When the problem appears limited to a TV or external display
HDMI or HDCP may be involved when playback works on a phone or computer screen but fails on a TV, particularly if the signal passes through an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture device. This is a conditional troubleshooting path: Disney’s current Error 39 explanation does not identify HDCP as the code’s universal cause.

HDCP is copy protection used in connected video equipment. Roku explains that HDMI-connected equipment must support the relevant HDCP standard for protected playback. For 4K UHD or HDR playback, Roku says HDCP 2.2 is required across the HDMI chain; check the specifications for the particular TV and equipment, because not every port on every TV necessarily has the same capabilities. See Roku’s guidance on fixing an HDCP error and the importance of HDCP 2.2 for 4K and HDR.
- Turn off the TV and streaming device.
- Temporarily remove intermediary HDMI equipment and connect the streaming device directly to the TV.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable, then try another TV HDMI input.
- If available, try a different known-compatible cable or display.
- If direct connection works, reconnect the receiver, soundbar, switch, or other equipment one piece at a time to identify where the failure returns.
- For 4K or HDR playback, verify that each device and connection in the chain supports the required HDCP level. You can also temporarily test a lower display setting or a non-4K title.
Roku recommends direct connection to the TV and testing another input, cable, or compatible display when investigating HDCP errors. That guidance supports diagnosing an HDMI chain; it does not establish that a particular cable or component caused Disney+ Error 39.

- Do not buy a cable or streaming device before testing. First check the plan and profile, then compare playback on another device. Consider replacing HDMI equipment only if the failure is limited to that connection and a direct connection or alternate cable changes the result.
- Do not upgrade the plan based on the code alone. Verify that the particular title is unavailable under your current plan before changing subscriptions.
- Do not factory-reset the TV or streaming device as an early step. A factory reset removes apps, settings, and logins. Try a restart and, if necessary, reinstall the app first.
- Do not assume an internet problem without other evidence. If other services and Disney+ browsing work and the code is specifically 39, start with authorization and device checks rather than router changes.
When to contact Disney+ support
Contact support if the title still fails on multiple supported devices after you have checked the account, plan, and profile, or if you cannot change the relevant account setting. Also escalate if the issue began immediately after a plan, account, app, or device change and the basic steps do not resolve it. The US Error 39 Help Center page directs users to support when its fixes fail and displays live support availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week; support availability may differ by market.
