They differ mainly in where they work, how they connect with an audience, and whether their central task is presenting music, hosting an event, manipulating sound, or creating tracks. These are overlapping working styles, not official or exclusive categories: one DJ may work in several of them.
What are the different types of DJs?
| Type | Main setting | Central task | Additional demands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club DJ | Club or bar | Select and mix music for the venue and crowd | Read the room; sometimes work with or perform as an MC. UK National Careers Service; Pirate |
| Radio DJ | Radio or broadcast studio | Select and present music within a program | Handle timing, links between tracks, listener interaction, interviews, and studio equipment. UK National Careers Service |
| Mobile DJ | Private or off-site events | Provide music for an event, often with a portable setup | Transport and set up equipment; requests, announcements, and hosting may be part of the job. Pioneer DJ |
| Turntablist or scratch DJ | Performance, practice, or competition | Manipulate sound as a live instrument | Develop precise manual technique, commonly using turntables and a mixer. Pirate; BPM Supreme |
| DJ/producer | Studio and performance settings | Create tracks, edits, or remixes, and potentially perform them | Use music-production skills and tools. ZIPDJ; BPM Supreme |
What does a club DJ do?
A club DJ plays and mixes music in bars or clubs, choosing tracks to suit both the venue’s music policy and the audience. The work is not just a sequence of songs: a DJ may read the dance floor, shape the energy of a set, mix tracks, and interact with the crowd. Some club DJs also work with an MC, but that is not required in every venue or set. A residency is one possible work arrangement, not a universal feature of the role. The UK National Careers Service profile outlines club and bar work; Pirate’s guide also emphasizes audience awareness and creative mixing.
What makes a radio DJ different?
A radio DJ selects and presents music for a broadcast program, speaking to listeners who are not gathered in the same room. The role may involve preparing playlists or scripts, introducing tracks, keeping segments on schedule, interviewing guests, and operating studio equipment. Presentation and timing are central: a track or interview has to fit the program, and spoken links help connect one part of the broadcast to the next. The UK National Careers Service lists presenting, music selection, interviews, timing, and studio operation among radio-DJ duties.
What does a mobile DJ do?
A mobile DJ travels to events such as weddings, birthdays, corporate functions, and parties. Depending on the job, the DJ may choose music around the event’s audience, take requests, make announcements, or act as a host. The distinguishing practical demand is often moving and setting up a working sound system at the venue.

Mobile DJ equipment depends on the event
A mobile setup may include a stand or booth, speakers, lighting, headphones, a microphone, music, and DJ gear. That is a description of possible event equipment, not a universal shopping list: the venue, event size, available sound system, and services expected from the DJ all affect what is needed. Pioneer DJ’s mobile-DJ guide highlights portability, durability, and professional appearance as practical considerations.
What is a turntablist or scratch DJ?
A turntablist uses turntables and a mixer as instruments, manipulating sounds through techniques such as scratching and juggling to create new musical passages. The focus is on the performance and transformation of sound, rather than primarily selecting a sequence of tracks for a venue or program. Pirate describes turntablism as sound manipulation used to make music and other sounds, typically with two or more turntables and a mixer. Vinyl is not the only possible method: digital systems can also support modern turntablist workflows. See Pirate’s overview and BPM Supreme’s discussion.

What does a DJ/producer do?
A DJ/producer combines DJ work with creating original tracks, edits, or remixes. DJing is about selecting and performing music for an audience; production is about composing or assembling the material itself. The two activities can meet on stage when a DJ performs original compositions or remixes in real time. ZIPDJ describes production as closely connected with DJ culture and notes how DJ software has expanded performance possibilities; BPM Supreme also notes that DJs often work across categories.

Start with the kind of work you want to practice, rather than assuming every DJ needs the same rig. A beginner DJ controller is one practical option for hands-on mixing practice, but it is not a requirement for every DJ path. The UK National Careers Service describes learning to set up equipment such as digital controllers and practicing mixing and remixing; Algoriddim’s djay School offers beginner lessons that cover equipment, DJ types, music sources, and gig preparation.
