Digger is a fictional 2026 film, not a documentary or a report of real events. Its title character is an oil baron played by Tom Cruise, and the premise turns on a powerful man’s attempt to cast himself as humanity’s savior after unleashing a disaster. The title’s documentary-like suggestion is a way to frame the film’s imagined future legacy—not evidence that its story happened.
What is Digger about?
Warner Bros.’ official synopsis describes a powerful man who launches “a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” The studio presents Digger as an original film by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. That synopsis sets up a conflict between the catastrophe a person has caused and the story he tells about his role in saving the world; it does not establish the disaster’s precise nature.
The title character is Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil baron, according to the Associated Press. The film’s premise invites questions about power, responsibility and self-image, but those are themes suggested by the setup, not a factual account of a real oil baron or disaster.
Why does the title say this could be a documentary in 100 years?
The phrase works as a thought-provoking frame for a fictional story: with enough distance, a film about a powerful figure and a disaster might look to later viewers like a document of its era. But Digger is not presented as documentary footage, historical reconstruction or a claim that its events will come true. The “in 100 years” idea is a speculative reading of the title and premise, not an official prediction or description of the film’s format.

Who made the film?
Iñárritu directed Digger and co-wrote its screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman. The story is credited to Berman, Iñárritu and Jez Butterworth. Warner Bros. credits Emmanuel Lubezki as director of photography, Conor O’Neill and Stephen Mirrione as editors, and Cosmo Sheldrake for music.

The production design is credited to Dennis Gassner and Richard Johnson. Jacqueline West handled costumes; Alessandro Bertolazzi is credited for makeup and hair, and Kazu Hiro for prosthetic makeup.
What is known about Cruise’s transformation and the film’s development?
The Associated Press reported on July 14, 2026, that Cruise plays Rockwell in heavy prosthetic makeup. AP also reported that Iñárritu first had the idea after completing The Revenant and that developing the story took about a decade. The director described Cruise’s transformation as “astonishing,” and called the project “not script, not a film, just a relentless recurring obsession that has endured through all these wild years,” according to AP.

What is VistaVision, and when is Digger scheduled to release?
Warner Bros. says the film was shot entirely in VistaVision, a film-camera format. That production detail identifies the format used; it does not by itself establish how the film will be presented at every theater.
The studio’s announced schedule lists international release beginning September 30, 2026, and North American theatrical release on October 2, 2026. Release dates and showtimes can vary by territory, so check local listings and the official tickets and trailers page for current information.
