But that is a weekend-by-weekend result, not evidence that Wicked surpassed Moana 2’s lifetime gross. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, meanwhile, led the earlier weekend with an estimated $62 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.
What happened at the box office?
The headline describes two different weekend chart frames. The Associated Press reported that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened at No. 1 for Dec. 20–22, 2024. A week later, Wicked edged Moana 2 in the Dec. 27–29 North American weekend figures reported by ScreenDollars.

Did Wicked beat Moana 2?
In the cited North American weekend comparisons, yes: Wicked grossed $13.5 million against Moana 2’s $13.1 million for Dec. 20–22, then $19.5 million against $18.9 million for Dec. 27–29. Those are separate weekend grosses, not a cumulative comparison. The cited reports do not establish that Wicked overtook Moana 2 in lifetime domestic or worldwide box office.

How much did Moana 2 earn overall?
Box Office Mojo’s page, accessed Oct. 8, 2026, lists Moana 2 with $460,405,297 in domestic gross, $598,836,867 internationally, and $1,059,242,164 worldwide. The same page lists its release span as Nov. 27, 2024–Apr. 10, 2025. These are the database’s cumulative totals, a different measure from any single weekend’s chart position. Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s $62 million was its estimated North American opening-weekend ticket sales for Dec. 20–22, 2024. AP reported it ahead of Mufasa: The Lion King in that weekend’s chart. The same AP estimates put Wicked and Moana 2 much closer together, with Wicked slightly ahead. The phrase “races to the top” therefore refers to Sonic 3 leading its opening-weekend chart; it does not describe the later Wicked–Moana 2 comparison.
