The available reporting does not establish that Laura Van Winkle was literally left “penniless,” and it does not show that a court made that finding. Reports about the divorce describe her requests for support and claims about marital assets and financial records. They also cite different income and royalty figures for Vanilla Ice, mostly tied to 2018 filings or allegations—not verified current earnings.
What the “penniless” claim actually establishes
“Penniless” is not a substantiated finding in the reporting available on Laura Van Winkle’s divorce. Entertainment Tonight’s account of her 2016 filing and later reports about financial disputes describe requests and allegations; none cited here establishes that she had no money or assets, or that a court concluded Ice had left her with nothing. Entertainment Tonight and The Blast report on the filings and claims, not a judicial finding of pennilessness.

What Laura Van Winkle requested in the divorce
Laura filed for divorce in Palm Beach, Florida, in October 2016. She and Vanilla Ice, whose legal name is Robert Van Winkle, married in 1997. Entertainment Tonight reported that her filing sought a parenting plan allowing her to “spend the majority of the time” with their children, as well as exclusive use and permanent ownership of their shared Florida home, spousal support and child support. Those were requests made in the case, not proof that a judge granted them.
What she alleged about assets and financial records
In 2018, The Blast reported that Laura alleged marital assets or funds had been placed in Van Rap, Ltd., or titled in Ice’s name. She reportedly sought records and an accounting, and asked the court to prevent further transfers. The article describes claims from filings; it does not document a court finding that assets were hidden.

TMZ separately reported that Laura sought to prevent further sales of shared assets and requested an accounting of proceeds from jet skis. It also reported her request that Ice pay for repairs to a Florida home. These disputes help explain the financial conflict, but they do not establish that she was left without resources. TMZ’s September 2018 report covers those requests.
Why the reported income and royalty figures differ
Reports from the divorce period cite several figures, but they do not all measure the same thing or come from the same source. They should not be combined into a single account of Ice’s income or treated as current figures.

| Reported figure | What the source says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| About $68,000 a month in average income | Celebrity Net Worth’s summary of figures it attributes to 2018 divorce filings. | A secondary report about filing figures—not an independently verified or current income statement. Celebrity Net Worth |
| About $400,000 a year from “Ice Ice Baby” royalties | Celebrity Net Worth’s account of figures attributed to the 2018 filings. | A reported royalty figure, not a current royalty statement or evidence of the amount Ice personally kept. |
| $825,000 a year | TMZ reported that Laura asserted Ice earned this amount. | Her reported assertion, not a verified figure, and not directly reconcilable with the approximate monthly figure above. TMZ |
Celebrity Net Worth also summarized figures it attributed to 2018 filings involving about 15 properties, eight cars, a boat, $3 million in liquid assets and an asserted minimum net worth of $10 million. Its account said real-estate valuations could change the total. These are reported filing details, not a current balance sheet or a court-established valuation.
Gross “Ice Ice Baby” royalties are not the same as personal earnings
The distinction matters because older reporting says some royalties associated with the song belonged to Suge Knight. In a 1998 Washington Post profile, Ice described his past relationship to Death Row Records as an investment of “about 3 or 4 million, with no return on my money.” The article also reported that Knight denied Ice’s allegations about how royalty points were transferred. That history is not an audited account of the later divorce, and it does not establish the current split of the song’s royalties. The Washington Post’s 1998 profile provides that earlier context.

What is known about the end of the marriage
The Atlantic’s 2026 retrospective describes Ice’s first marriage, to Laura Giaritta, as lasting from 1997 to 2019. That supports saying the marriage ended in 2019, but it does not establish the terms of a financial settlement or resolve the allegations reported during the divorce. The Atlantic.
