In a January 2018 statement about A Rainy Day in New York, Chalamet said he did not want to profit from the film and pledged his entire salary to three charities. Allen later alleged in his 2020 memoir that Chalamet made the statement to improve his Oscar chances; that account of Chalamet’s motive is Allen’s claim, not an independently established fact.
What Chalamet said in January 2018
On January 16, 2018, amid renewed criticism of actors who had worked with Allen, Chalamet posted a statement about his role in Allen’s film A Rainy Day in New York. As reproduced by The Guardian, he wrote: “I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities: Time’s Up, the LGBT Centre in New York, and Rainn [the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network].”

He also said contractual obligations prevented him from directly answering questions about his decision to work with Allen: “I’m not able to answer the question directly because of contractual obligations.” Chalamet’s recorded statement expressed regret about working on the film and pledged the salary to the named organizations; it did not say he was paying Allen back.
Why he said he was donating the salary
Chalamet’s stated reason was that he did not want to profit from his work on the film. The announcement came as public attention returned to Dylan Farrow’s allegation against Allen and actors faced criticism for having worked with him. The ABC News report describes Farrow’s allegation, Allen’s denial, and the investigation by Connecticut prosecutors, who elected not to charge Allen.

Those are separate facts: Farrow made an allegation, Allen denied it, and prosecutors investigated and did not bring charges. Chalamet’s statement addressed his own participation in Allen’s film and his intended donation; it should not be recast as a legal finding about Allen.
What Allen later alleged about Chalamet’s motive
In his 2020 memoir Apropos of Nothing, Allen offered a different explanation for the donation announcement. The Independent quoted Allen as saying Chalamet and his agent thought denouncing Allen could improve Chalamet’s chance of winning an Oscar for Call Me by Your Name, and that Chalamet had told Allen’s sister he needed to make the statement for that reason.

- Greta Gerwig's adaptation of the timeless and beloved story of four sisters each determined to live life on their own terms.
That is Allen’s allegation about Chalamet’s private motive. The cited report does not independently verify it. It differs from Chalamet’s public explanation, which was that he did not want to profit from the film.

The reviewed reports do not establish that Allen was formally banned, so the word “banned” is not supported by this account. Nor do they report that Chalamet returned money to Allen. They document Chalamet’s pledge to donate his salary to Time’s Up, the LGBT Center in New York, and RAINN—not a payment to Allen. The amount of the salary and the amounts the organizations ultimately received are not established by these reports; TIME reported that representatives did not immediately respond to a request about those figures.
