Neve Campbell, whose Sidney Prescott has anchored the franchise since the original Scream, sat out Scream VI after rejecting an offer she said did not reflect her value to the series. The film continued with Sam and Tara Carpenter; after a major reset ahead of Scream 7, Campbell returned and Sidney moved back to the center of the story.
Why Neve Campbell wasn’t in Scream VI
Campbell returned as Sidney for the 2022 Scream, but did not appear in its 2023 follow-up. The reason she gave was a pay dispute. In 2022, she said, “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.” In a later interview, she put it more plainly: “I just didn’t feel right. I just knew that my value to this franchise was bigger than what had been offered.” The Los Angeles Times reported her explanation in February 2026.
Her absence was not the same as the franchise ending. Scream VI made Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who play sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, its leads. It showed that the series could move forward without Sidney for an installment, even as Campbell’s absence marked a conspicuous break with the films’ original central character.
How the franchise shifted back to Sidney
The path to Scream 7 involved a separate set of departures. Spyglass removed Barrera from the production; Ortega also left, and director Christopher Landon departed. Variety reported that Kevin Williamson took over directing and rewrote a substantially reworked screenplay with Guy Busick. These production changes should not be conflated with Campbell’s earlier salary dispute: the available reporting does not say that her pay disagreement caused the Carpenter actresses’ departures.

Campbell announced in March 2024 that she would return as Sidney. Released in 2026, Scream 7 centers on Sidney and her family confronting Ghostface, putting the franchise’s longtime survivor back in the lead role. The Guardian covered her return announcement, and TheWrap described the film’s shift from the Carpenter sisters to Sidney.
What the box-office openings do—and don’t—show
The two films’ reported domestic opening weekends give context to the change in leads, but they cannot isolate the effect of any one actor. The Associated Press reported that Scream VI opened to $44.4 million domestically in 2023, while Scream 7 opened to an estimated $64.1 million in 2026, then described as a franchise best. Both figures are opening-weekend totals and are not adjusted for inflation. They reflect films with different casts and production circumstances, not a controlled comparison of Campbell’s individual box-office draw. The Associated Press reported the figures.

Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, called Campbell a major draw for older viewers who grew up with the original films, comparing her place in Scream to Jamie Lee Curtis’s in Halloween. That is an industry assessment, not a measurement of how much Campbell alone contributed to either opening.

That phrase is a judgment, not an objective ranking. Sidney is the defining survivor of the original films, and Campbell’s return gave Scream 7 a direct connection to that history. But Scream VI also demonstrated that the franchise could tell a story led by Sam and Tara without her. The clearest answer is that the new movies nearly left Sidney out of the story’s future, but did leave her out for just one installment before bringing her back.
