That connects the 1984 Pepsi commercial injury to his account of his dependency, but the available records do not establish that the injury alone caused his later substance-use problems or his death in 2009.
What happened during the Pepsi commercial shoot?
On January 27, 1984, Jackson’s hair caught fire when pyrotechnics ignited nearby during filming at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium. A contemporary Washington Post report published January 29 quoted his physician, Steven Hoefflin, as saying the fireworks appeared to have gone off at the wrong time, while noting that the pyrotechnics themselves had not malfunctioned. The account supports describing the incident as a mistimed effect, not a defective device.

In a 2009 retrospective interview for Inside Edition, nurse Cathy McGrath recalled Jackson arriving with a sizeable scalp burn and described it as second- and third-degree. That severity description is McGrath’s recollection in the interview, rather than a medical record presented here. She also remembered him as initially shaken and later pleasant and soft-spoken.
What did Jackson say about pain medication and dependency?
In a 1993 public statement quoted in CNN’s July 15, 2009 transcript, Jackson said he had remained outside the country after his tour to receive treatment for dependency on pain medication. He said the medication had first been prescribed to relieve pain after reconstructive surgery on his scalp:

Does the evidence show that the injury caused his addiction?
It supports a connection in Jackson’s account: he linked the initial prescription to pain after scalp surgery and acknowledged dependency on pain medication. It does not establish a continuous, medically documented chain from the 1984 burn through later substance use. The sources available here do not provide a full clinical timeline of his prescriptions and treatment episodes.
Miko Brando, who was present at the accident, challenged the certainty of the claim that the injury began a lifelong addiction in an ABC News report dated July 16, 2009. His comment is a contemporaneous counterpoint, not proof of a different medical explanation. The exact development of Jackson’s longer history cannot be settled from these accounts alone.

What did the coroner say caused Jackson’s death?
The County of Los Angeles Department of Coroner’s autopsy report for case 2009-04415 identified the immediate cause of death as acute propofol intoxication, with benzodiazepine effect as a contributing factor. The report states: “The cause of death is acute propofol intoxication.”
The coroner classified the manner of death as homicide. Its report cited administration by another person, use outside a hospital without appropriate medical indication, failure to meet the standard of care, and no support for self-administration. It did not identify the 1984 Pepsi commercial injury as the direct cause of the 2009 intoxication.
