The title’s premise is not established: the available sources do not verify a roster of 15 starlets who deliberately used sex appeal to secure particular roles or favors. They do document a more complicated history—one in which publicity departments, powerful patrons, collaborators and filmmakers could shape women’s careers and images, sometimes without evidence that the performer chose the strategy. These cases are best understood by asking who controlled the opportunity, what the performer actually did, and whether a source connects that action to a specific outcome.
Why the “15 starlets” claim needs qualification
A sexualized image is not proof of a sexual bargain. A casting decision or publicity campaign does not establish that the performer chose the tactic, and a subsequent career success does not prove that the image caused it. The sources available for this topic do not substantiate 15 individual stories matching the title’s claim. Rather than assign a shared motive without evidence, the cases below distinguish creative work, publicity, patronage and exploitation.
What the documented cases show
Elaine May: creative work and professional backing
Vanity Fair reports that Elaine May made a major, uncredited contribution to the screenplay for Reds, and that Warren Beatty later decided to produce and star in a project with her. That account supports a story about writing and professional collaboration—not sexual leverage. Writer and friend Peter Feibleman characterized the dynamic this way: “The minute sex got into it, she would have been dead in the water.” That is Feibleman’s assessment, not a statement by May. Read Vanity Fair’s account of May and Beatty.
Jane Russell: publicity is not proof of a personal bargain
A University of California Press review of Christina Rice’s biography describes how publicity for The Outlaw foregrounded Russell’s cleavage, while discussing the tension between that marketing and Russell’s own identity. The review also notes that music gave her professional latitude. It documents an industry selling a sexualized image; it does not show that Russell used her body to obtain a particular favor or role. Sue Lyon: an adult-controlled image imposed on a young performer
Sue Lyon was 14 when she was cast in Lolita. Scholarship examines the sexualization and exploitation surrounding the film’s production and publicity. That is a case about how adults and the industry framed a young performer—not evidence that Lyon used a sexualized image to advance her career. Read the academic article on Lyon and Lolita.
Marion Davies: patronage and constrained choices
PBS describes Davies as a major silent-film star and says William Randolph Hearst exerted strong influence over her career. This supports a discussion of patronage and power, but it does not establish a specific bargain or Davies’s motive. Influence from a powerful patron should not be recast as a strategy the performer chose. Read PBS’s account of Davies.

Dorothy Stratten: visibility is not a dependable route to film stardom
A 2026 Vanity Fair feature cautions that Playboy exposure was not a natural conduit to film stardom. That distinction challenges the assumption that a sexualized public profile automatically delivers a career outcome. The feature does not establish that Stratten used exposure to obtain a particular role. Read Vanity Fair’s feature on Stratten.
Starr: a different kind of performer, outside the usual category
The Los Angeles Times profile of Starr describes novelty choices in her act, including a trained panther, and reports her recollection that she wanted a distinctive performance. It does not establish a Hollywood-starlet career or a sexual bargain. Starr belongs in a discussion of performers only if the scope is broadened beyond film actresses. How to distinguish agency from exploitation or publicity
When assessing a story about a performer’s image and career, separate four questions rather than treating visibility as proof of motive:
- Who controlled the image or opportunity? A studio campaign, a patron’s influence and a performer’s own creative decision are not interchangeable.
- Was the performer an adult with meaningful agency? Lyon’s age at casting makes claims about her supposed career strategy especially inappropriate.
- Is the choice documented as hers? Publicity around Russell’s appearance establishes how she was marketed, not that she devised the campaign.
- Does the evidence connect the choice to the claimed result? May’s writing contribution and later collaboration with Beatty are documented; a sexual bargain is not.
These distinctions do not deny that performers could make deliberate choices about image or self-presentation. They do prevent a producer’s marketing decision, a patron’s influence, or an exploitative framing from being misrepresented as a woman’s chosen route to success.
