The Associated Press reported that Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” and made other lewd and racist remarks about Latinos, Jewish people and Black people. The joke drew criticism, including from some Republicans. The Trump campaign distanced itself from the remarks: senior adviser Danielle Alvarez told the AP, “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” Associated Press, October 28, 2024
TIME’s account of the rally reported the campaign’s statement that “These jokes do not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”

What did the report say about searches?
On October 28, 2024, Gizmodo reported that Google searches for Hinchcliffe had surpassed searches for Taylor Swift, crediting statistician Nate Silver with pointing out the comparison. The report also described search interest as concentrated in Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California. Gizmodo, October 28, 2024
That is a reported comparison of search interest—not a published count of how many people searched, a measure of everyone’s opinion, or evidence that all Google users were more interested in Hinchcliffe than Swift. The accessible article text gives no numeric margin, exact comparison window, geographic filters or query setup. Without those details, the comparison cannot be independently reproduced from the report.

What can—and can’t—be concluded?
- What the report supports: Gizmodo said Hinchcliffe searches eclipsed Taylor Swift searches and attributed the observation to Nate Silver.
- What it does not establish: the exact search volumes, how large the difference was, or the settings behind the comparison.
- How to read the regional claim: the named locations are an attributed observation in the report; it does not provide numerical state-by-state values in its text.
The timing offers context for the burst of curiosity: Hinchcliffe’s remarks at the rally became a major news story, and the campaign publicly distanced itself from the Puerto Rico joke. The search comparison describes attention as reported at that moment; it does not by itself explain why people searched or what they thought about the comedian, the joke or the rally.
