But that is a designer’s recollection, not a surviving written statement from Diana. Her late wardrobe offers context for the story, not proof of one private motive behind every outfit.
What did Diana reportedly say about shorter skirts?
In a later account reported by Marie Claire, Azagury recalled that Diana wanted skirts “super short.” He said he and her butler, Paul Burrell, advised against shortening the pale-blue dress she wore to a June 1997 performance of Swan Lake. The recollection was relayed from Azagury’s comments on a Hello! podcast; it should not be treated as a direct, independently documented quotation from Diana.
The detail is suggestive, but its limits matter: it supports the narrower claim that Azagury remembered Diana asking for shorter skirts. It does not establish that she wanted every late-period outfit to be more revealing, or explain why she made any particular choice.
How did Diana’s late wardrobe differ from her earlier royal image?
Historic Royal Palaces describes Diana’s later eveningwear as more pared down than the elaborate gowns associated with the early 1980s. The institution’s account of a Catherine Walker green velvet dress, dated to 1992, gives a useful example of the range: Diana wore it to private family dinners, and it paired a double-breasted front with a backless halterneck. The account notes that she sometimes chose bolder styles for private formal occasions than for public ones. Historic Royal Palaces’ exhibition account therefore helps distinguish the setting as well as the silhouette.

Designer Catherine Walker described clothing as a form of communication for Diana, saying: “Clothes were even more a form of language for Diana, because she spent all of her adult life dressed up for a royal job.” That offers a designer’s perspective on the pressures around royal dress; it does not make any single look a definitive statement of intent.
What were the notable dresses from her final years?
In a Vogue interview, Azagury described a sequence of dresses from Diana’s later years. The examples show different cuts and occasions rather than a single uniform style:

- Red Venice dress, 1995: one of the late-period designs Azagury identified.
- Black “Bashir” dress, 1995: another named design in his account.
- Ice-blue “Swan Lake” dress, 1997: the dress associated with Azagury’s recollection about shortening the skirt.
- Red Washington dress, 1997: a further late-period design in the sequence.
- Unfinished black “Final Goodbye Dress”: a design with hand-beading, a plunging neckline and a high front slit. Diana never wore it.
The final dress is evidence of a design in progress, not of an outfit Diana publicly chose to wear. Keeping that distinction clear avoids turning an unworn garment into proof of her intentions.
Was the “revenge dress” part of this late-period shift?
The black silk dress by Christina Stambolian, later nicknamed the “revenge dress,” belongs to the story of Diana’s public image but predates the final years of her life. According to the Associated Press, she wore it to a Serpentine Gallery gala on June 29, 1994, the night a televised interview aired in which then-Prince Charles acknowledged infidelity. “Revenge dress” was a name attached to the garment later; there is no basis here for saying Diana herself used it.

What did Diana say about giving up her dresses?
In a July 1, 1997 Vanity Fair report about the charity sale, Diana said: “Yes, of course it is a wrench to let go of these beautiful dresses,” and added that she was “extremely happy that others can now share the joy that I had wearing them.” The remarks capture both attachment to the clothes and pleasure in their future use; they do not identify one message or motive for each dress.
Diana put 79 dresses into a Christie’s sale in 1997. Historic Royal Palaces says it raised over $3.2 million for HIV/AIDS and cancer charities; Vogue reported $3.25 million for cancer and AIDS charities. The figures are reported at different levels of precision by those sources, rather than evidence of two separate sales.
