It was royal biographer Robert Hardman’s characterization of William and Catherine’s approach to parenting, reported by Marie Claire in the context of Catherine’s recovery after abdominal surgery in January 2024.
Who said Prince William didn’t want to leave it all to the nanny?
Hardman made the remark in an interview with People, as reported by Marie Claire. The article quotes him saying: “They are a modern royal couple. There would have been more delegation [in the past]. He doesn’t want to leave it all to the nanny.” In the surrounding passage, “he” refers to William.
That distinction matters: the nanny line is Hardman’s interpretation, not something William is documented as saying himself. The original interview’s publication date and exact wording were not established in the reporting available here, so the quotation should be attributed to Hardman as quoted by Marie Claire.
What was Hardman saying about the family?
Hardman’s point was that William and Catherine put family life at the center of their parenting. He described them as a “very tight family unit” and said William “wants to be there for them.” He also said the couple aim to give their children as normal and unobtrusive an upbringing as possible, rather than make them feel they live in “a special gilded cage.”

The report connects that characterization to the couple’s wish to maintain a steady family life while Catherine was away from public duties. It does not establish the details of their private childcare arrangements, how much a nanny helps, or how responsibilities are divided at home.
What did Catherine say about her recovery?
Catherine underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024. On March 22, she announced in a video message that tests following the surgery had found cancer and that her medical team had advised preventive chemotherapy. She said the news had come as “a huge shock” and that she and William were doing what they could to “process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.” CNN published a transcript of her statement.
