The Times of India and, a day later, The Indian Express reported that some attendees were asked to give witness statements; Hindustan Times reported a police denial on April 1. The available accounts do not establish a final attendee count or resolve the contradiction.
What the reports said
| Date and outlet | Account |
|---|---|
| April 1, 2025 — The Times of India | Reported that Khar Police had served notices on some people who attended the show and were seeking statements. The article referred to Section 179 of the CrPC. Read The Times of India report. |
| April 1, 2025 — Hindustan Times, citing PTI | Reported a Mumbai Police clarification that no audience members had been summoned for inquiry or to record statements. Read the Hindustan Times report. |
| April 2, 2025 — The Indian Express | Reported, citing police sources, that a few attendees had been served notices to visit a police station and record witness statements. It said senior police officers declined comment and did not give a number. Read The Indian Express report. |
These accounts should not be collapsed into a single confirmed version. The first and third reports described notices, while the same-day Hindustan Times report described a police denial. The articles do not reproduce a notice, identify an attendee with one, or cite a police record that settles the disagreement.
Why attendees were reportedly contacted
The reports framed any notices as a request for witness statements in connection with a police investigation—not as charges against audience members. The Times of India quoted former IPS officer and lawyer YP Singh saying police could call one or two attendees to give statements, while noting his view that doing so was not mandatory because electronic evidence was available. That was Singh’s assessment, not a finding that notices were in fact issued.
The show was Kamra’s “Naya Bharat,” performed at Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s Khar area on February 2, 2025. The Times of India said police were investigating remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Reports described a performance and allegations under investigation; they do not establish that Kamra’s remarks were defamatory.

How the notice reports fit the wider case
On March 23, 2025, Kamra posted a video of a satirical performance, according to Scroll. That night, Shiv Sena members vandalized The Habitat studio, Scroll reported. Mumbai Police filed a case against Kamra the following day, while the Associated Press reported that police opened an investigation after a complaint over a skit referring to Shinde and that the venue had been ransacked. This context explains the surrounding investigation, but does not verify whether attendees received notices.
Scroll’s account of the events describes a parody song alluding to Shinde without naming him. The Associated Press reported Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying, “We respect freedom of expression, but recklessness will not be tolerated.” It also quoted The Habitat Comedy Club saying it was “shocked, worried and extremely broken” by the vandalism and describing its decision to remain shut while it considered how to offer a platform for free expression without endangering the venue and its property.
