Yes: reports in October 2024 said Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had bought a home in Portugal, and an Associated Press report in August 2026 later referred to the couple’s Portugal vacation property. The 2024 coverage placed it near Melides, but the sources reviewed do not establish an exact address, price, or precise purchase date.
What has been reported about the purchase?
In October 2024, coverage said the couple had bought a property in Portugal. The Portugal News attributed the original purchase claim to the British newspaper Daily Mail, making its report a secondary account rather than property-record confirmation: The Portugal News, 17 October 2024. Vogue described reports of a possible home near Melides, framing the purchase as reported rather than independently verified: Vogue, 18 October 2024. Us Weekly likewise called it a reported summer-home purchase: Us Weekly, 1 November 2024.
The clearest later reference in the reviewed coverage came from the Associated Press in August 2026. It described the Portugal property as a vacation home the couple planned to maintain alongside their Montecito, California, home. The AP account did not provide a town, address, price, or transaction record: Associated Press, August 2026.
Where in Portugal is the house?
The 2024 reports placed the property near Melides, in Portugal’s Alentejo coastal region. That is the reported area, not a confirmed address. Us Weekly discussed Costa Terra Golf & Ocean Club in connection with the story, but its report does not establish that the couple’s property is within that development.

Neither the later AP reference nor the other reviewed coverage identifies a street, parcel, or publicly verified property listing. An exact location should not be inferred from the mention of Melides or the nearby development.
What is confirmed, and what remains unclear?
- Reported: October 2024 coverage said the couple bought a home in Portugal; later, the AP referred to their Portugal vacation property.
- Reported location: 2024 reports named the area near Melides.
- Not established in the reviewed coverage: the purchase price, precise transaction date, exact address, deed or registry record, and a direct statement from Harry or Meghan confirming transaction details.
- Not established: that the home is a public rental or open to visitors. The reviewed reports do not present it as accommodation available to book.
Does the Portugal home mean Portugal is their main residence?
No. The AP described the couple as maintaining homes in both Montecito and Portugal, calling the Portuguese property a vacation home. Separately, The Washington Post reported that a Companies House filing listed the United States as Prince Harry’s “New Country/State Usually Resident,” with the change dated 29 June 2023: The Washington Post, 17 April 2024. A vacation property does not, by itself, establish a principal residence or a change in residency.

What about reports of a Portuguese passport benefit?
Us Weekly quoted royal author Christopher Andersen speculating that a purchase might offer a “Golden Passport” advantage. That is commentary, not confirmation of the couple’s motive, their legal status, or any passport or residency benefit. The reporting reviewed does not establish that the purchase resulted in such a benefit: Us Weekly, 1 November 2024.
