How was Austin’s relationship with Mercury different?
Austin and Mercury were romantic partners before remaining close friends. Mercury proposed to her in 1973, according to Biography.com, but they did not marry. The Guardian reports that Mercury later called Austin his “common-law wife”; this describes how he regarded their bond and does not establish a legal marriage.

Austin later had two sons with painter Piers Cameron. Biography.com says she did not marry Cameron. Her later marriage to Holford was separate from her relationship with Mercury.
