Where the alleged press deal comes from
The specific claim appears in a December 4, 2024 article by The Gaudie. It says the family had reportedly permitted filming of celebrities arriving at the funeral on the understanding that Bear could attend without disturbance. The passage does not name who reported the arrangement, cite a press representative, or show documentary evidence. The Gaudie’s account therefore establishes that the allegation was published, not that an agreement was made.
Contemporaneous reports about the funeral describe the service and the media presence outside the church, but do not confirm negotiated terms. Cameras or reporters being present cannot, by themselves, show that the family agreed to specific conditions.
What is established about the funeral
Payne’s funeral was held at St Mary’s Church in Amersham on November 20, 2024. The Associated Press reported on the mourners and the scene outside the church, describing the service as private. Geoff and Karen Payne were present. Bear was seven at the time. The AP also described floral tributes bearing the words “Son” and “Daddy.” The AP report documents those details, but does not establish whether Bear attended under any press arrangement.

ABC News likewise reported a floral display reading “daddy,” a tribute to Payne’s role as Bear’s father. That visible tribute is not evidence of Bear’s attendance or of any agreement with the press. ABC News’ funeral report does not verify the alleged terms.
What Cheryl and Payne’s family said about media coverage
On October 18, 2024, Payne’s former partner and Bear’s mother, Cheryl, criticized media coverage following Payne’s death and expressed concern about what Bear might encounter as he grew up. In a statement reported by ITV, she wrote: “What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days. It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future.” ITV’s report of Cheryl’s statement supports the point that she voiced concern about media exploitation. It does not say that Geoff or Karen Payne negotiated funeral press terms.

In March 2025, Payne’s family said that media attention and speculation had caused “indescribable, lasting damage,” with particular concern for Bear, according to The Independent. That later criticism provides broader context about the family’s objections to coverage. It does not confirm a specific arrangement at the funeral.
