Harry Potter performs uncontrolled magic before Hogwarts, then learns and deliberately casts named spells at school and later. The distinction matters: his childhood magical outbursts are real, but they are not the same as choosing an incantation and casting a spell.
Did Harry use magic before Hogwarts?
Yes, though not intentionally. The official Harry Potter account describes several incidents from Harry’s childhood: his hair growing back after a haircut, a jumper shrinking, escaping Dudley by unexpectedly ending up on a roof, and the glass at the zoo disappearing while Dudley was hitting him. Harry did not understand or control what was happening. The account explains that young witches and wizards can produce accidental magic before school, without a wand or a way to channel it. Harry Potter’s explanation of accidental magic before Hogwarts.
So if “cast a spell” means that Harry caused a magical effect, the answer is yes even before he reaches Hogwarts. If it means deliberately using a known spell, those childhood episodes do not qualify.
When does Harry deliberately cast spells?
Once Harry begins learning magic at Hogwarts, he practices spells in class and uses named spells in later events. The official franchise feature on spells from Philosopher’s Stone gives examples from across the books, including Harry using Wingardium Leviosa to keep a sidecar aloft during the Battle of the Seven Potters, attempting Alohomora on the Hogwarts gates unsuccessfully, and using Locomotor Mortis against Malfoy. It also names Harry among those who use Petrificus Totalus against Death Eaters. The official feature on spells introduced in Philosopher’s Stone.

Which spell is Harry best known for?
Expelliarmus, the Disarming Charm, is most closely associated with Harry. He learns it from Snape during the Duelling Club in his second year and uses it repeatedly. In Deathly Hallows, Remus Lupin warns him: “Expelliarmus is a useful spell, Harry, but the Death Eaters seem to think it is your signature move, and I urge you not to let it become so!” The official account reproduces the line and identifies Lupin as its speaker. More on Expelliarmus as Harry’s signature spell.
Other clear examples of Harry casting spells
- Accio: Harry practices and masters the Summoning Charm while preparing for the second Triwizard task. It summons an object to the caster, who must picture the target clearly. The official Accio reference.
- Wingardium Leviosa: Harry uses the Levitation Charm to keep a sidecar in the air during the Battle of the Seven Potters.
- Alohomora: He tries the unlocking spell on the Hogwarts gates in Half-Blood Prince, but it does not work.
- Petrificus Totalus: The Body-Bind Curse is among the spells the official feature says Harry uses against Death Eaters.
- Expecto Patronum: Harry learns the Patronus Charm from Lupin and later teaches it to Dumbledore’s Army. Casting it requires the incantation and concentration on a very happy memory. The official feature on spells Harry taught Dumbledore’s Army.
Does the underage-magic rule change the answer?
No. The rule concerns deliberate magic performed outside school by witches and wizards under 17, subject to exceptions. Harry nearly faces expulsion in his fifth year after casting a Patronus in front of Dudley, but the official account says the case involved behind-the-scenes meddling. That rule does not make his childhood outbursts non-magical: those are described as accidental magic he could not channel or control. The official overview of rules about magic.

Is there one definitive “first spell”?
It depends on what counts. Harry’s earliest magical effects occur before he knows about the wizarding world, but they are uncontrolled and have no stated incantation. A question about his first deliberate, named spell is different; the official examples establish that he casts many spells, but do not establish a single definitive first one across both books and films. The examples above include book events, and official reference material can mix book and film appearances, so a claim about the first scene in a particular adaptation needs to specify which version it means.
