But the evidence does not establish a permanent, irrevocable global exit: LG Korea reportedly left open the possibility of returning if demand improved.
What LG’s discontinuation means
LG’s U.S. pages label the UBK80 and UBK90 “DISCONTINUED.” Those pages confirm the status of these models in the U.S. market, not a complete accounting of every regional product code.
In December 2024, MobileSyrup reported that LG had discontinued its Blu-ray players, citing FlatpanelsHD. Ars Technica likewise reported that production had stopped and LG would not replenish third-party stock. These reports describe an exit from the lineup then on sale; they do not establish what stock a particular retailer has today. LG Korea’s reported position also left open a possible return if demand improved, so “discontinued” should not be read as a promise that LG will never make another player.
Can you still buy an LG UBK80 or UBK90?
Possibly, but availability depends on individual sellers. Since the models are discontinued, a listing may be leftover stock or a used unit rather than a newly replenished product. Check the seller, whether the unit is new or used, disc-region compatibility, return policy, and current stock before buying.

How the UBK80 and UBK90 differ
LG’s product descriptions and 2018 specification sheets list both as 4K Ultra HD disc players. The most consequential picture-format difference is Dolby Vision support on the UBK90; the UBK80 lists HDR10 compatibility. The specifications below are manufacturer-listed, not independent test results.
| Feature | LG UBK80 | LG UBK90 |
|---|---|---|
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Supported (LG product page and 2018 specification sheet) | Supported (LG product page and 2018 product sheet) |
| HDR formats | HDR10 (LG product page and 2018 specification sheet) | HDR10 and Dolby Vision (LG product page and 2018 product sheet) |
| Other listed disc playback | Blu-ray, DVD, audio CD; 3D Blu-ray/DVD playback listed on product page (LG) | Blu-ray, DVD, audio CD (LG 2018 product sheet) |
| HDMI outputs | One (LG 2018 specification sheet) | Two, with one intended for audio only (LG 2018 product sheet) |
| USB | USB input and playback listed by LG | Not stated in the cited LG product sheet |
For an HDR television that supports Dolby Vision, the UBK90’s format support may matter; otherwise, compare the connections you need, your disc collection, and the unit’s condition. Confirm region compatibility for the exact discs you plan to play, rather than assuming a used or imported unit will suit them.

A separate change to LG player services
LG’s U.S. support announcement index lists a November 7, 2024 notice ending Gracenote Music ID, Video ID, and eyeQ EPG services for Blu-ray player and Blu-ray home theater products. This service change is separate from physical-disc playback: ending those online identification and guide services does not itself mean a player can no longer play a disc.
Why the market picture is mixed
Physical-media sales were not moving in one direction across every category in the figures Ars Technica reported. Citing the Consumer Technology Association, Ars said U.S. Blu-ray unit sales peaked at 884,000 in 2017. Citing the Digital Entertainment Group, it reported a 22.2% decline in combined Blu-ray and DVD sales in the first half of 2024, alongside a 44% increase in SteelBook sales and 16% growth in 4K UHD Blu-ray catalog sales over that same half-year. These figures describe different measures and segments: the overall decline does not mean every physical-media category fell.

What to consider if you need another player
Ars Technica reported in December 2024 that Panasonic and Sony continued selling players and mentioned a Magnetar UPD900 release. That report does not establish which models are currently available or how they compare. Check current manufacturer specifications and retailer stock before choosing a replacement, especially for Dolby Vision support, disc-region compatibility, HDMI and audio connections, and return terms.
