Yes—Kris Kristofferson later said he landed a National Guard helicopter at Johnny Cash’s home to get his attention. But the familiar version blends disputed details: Kristofferson said Cash was not there, the song was not “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and he was not flying with a beer in hand.
What Kristofferson said happened
In a 2014 interview with American Songwriter, Kristofferson described the landing as an effort to make an impression. “I did land a helicopter there and it was a National Guard helicopter. I was trying to make an impression, but I already knew him for a year and a half.”
It was not, in his account, a first introduction or a chance encounter with a stranger. Kristofferson said he had already known Cash for roughly a year and a half. He was working as a janitor at Columbia Records and had tried to get songs to Cash through June Carter or guitarist Luther Perkins. The landing was a dramatic way to press his case, not the beginning of their relationship. The Associated Press also recounts the competing versions of the episode in its 2024 obituary.
Was Johnny Cash home when the helicopter landed?
The accounts differ. Kristofferson said Cash was not home when he landed. In the familiar version summarized by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Cash heard the helicopter, came out, and met Kristofferson as he arrived with a tape.

These are retrospective recollections, not a surviving contemporaneous record of the landing or the conversation. The sources establish that the two men later described the scene differently; they do not establish that either man deliberately invented details.
Was the song on the tape “Sunday Morning Coming Down”?
That is the other major disagreement. Cash’s version connects the visit with “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” Kristofferson said the song he brought that day was an older, unreleased song that was never recorded—not “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” The AP obituary also notes the dispute.

Cash did later record and perform “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and that success helps explain why the song became tied to the helicopter story. The Hall of Fame and Museum reports that Cash’s live version reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart on October 10, 1970, and stayed there for two weeks. It also reports that the Country Music Association named the song Song of the Year. Those later achievements do not show that it was the song on the tape Kristofferson delivered at the house.
Was Kristofferson holding a beer while flying?
Kristofferson rejected the beer-in-hand image in his own account, saying he could not have flown a helicopter while holding one. The AP also reports his objection to that detail. It belongs to the embellished version of the anecdote, not to Kristofferson’s recollection of the flight.

Why the story matters
The helicopter landing captures Kristofferson’s persistence, but it should not be mistaken for the moment he first met Cash or as proof that the landing immediately secured a recording. Kristofferson’s account places the stunt within an existing relationship and earlier attempts to get his songs heard. The later success of “Sunday Morning Coming Down” is real; whether that song was on the tape delivered that day remains disputed.
A 2016 PBS American Masters clip is described as an outtake from The Highwaymen: Friends Till the End, with John Carter Cash recalling the helicopter story. Its description is evidence of another later retelling, not a contemporaneous recording of the event.
