No reliable evidence supports the claim that Keanu Reeves donated all—or 70 percent—of his earnings from the original The Matrix to charity. Reeves’s publicist denied the specific 70 percent claim. That denial does not mean Reeves never gave to charity; it means the widely repeated story about his Matrix salary is unsubstantiated.
What did Reeves’s publicist say?
In a January 12, 2022 report, The Independent reported that Reeves’s publicist denied a claim that he had donated 70 percent of his salary from the original Matrix to charity. The publicist’s statement, as quoted by the newspaper, was: “The story is not true, Keanu Reeves did not donate 70 per cent of his salary to charity”.
The statement addresses the 70 percent allegation specifically. It is not a public accounting of Reeves’s earnings or charitable giving, and it does not establish that he never donated money.
Was the reported $31.5 million donation real?
The rumor circulated with an approximately $31.5 million figure. That number is part of the claim, not a verified donation amount. A Zoom TV article updated October 6, 2026, revisited the story and likewise described the figure as unsupported and the 70 percent claim as denied by the publicist in 2022.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The sources reviewed do not establish a precise amount Reeves donated from the film’s earnings—or a complete account of his charitable giving. So the careful conclusion is not that he gave nothing, but that the specific 70 percent, approximately $31.5 million story has not been substantiated and was denied by his publicist.
What is known about Reeves’s charitable activity?
The Independent reported that Reeves said in a 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview that he had a private foundation supporting children’s hospitals and cancer research. As quoted in the newspaper, he said the foundation “helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research” and added, “I don’t like to attach my name to it.” The article also described support he gave his sister Kim during her illness.

Those accounts provide context for reports of private philanthropy; they do not verify a donation of his Matrix salary. Separate stories about gifts to film crews should not be treated as evidence for this particular claim either.
