Yes. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer later acknowledged that they had crushes on each other while making The Sound of Music. But they also said they were never a couple: Andrews called them “never an item,” and described them as best friends. Their retrospective comments describe mutual attraction, not a dating relationship or an affair.

What Andrews and Plummer said about their crushes

In interviews with Diane Sawyer for the film’s 50th-anniversary coverage, both actors spoke about having a crush during production, according to ABC News’s March 16, 2015 report. Andrews said they were “never an item” and that they became best friends. ABC News reported their recollections.

Plummer joked that they “should have ended up together” and “should have had a huge smashing affair,” adding that there was no time because Andrews had her children with her. That was a humorous look back at a missed possibility, not a statement that an affair took place.

Did they ever date or have an affair?

No. Andrews’s own description is clear: “We were never an item, as they say.” She said they became best friends, adding that this was “probably because we weren’t an item.” The actors’ accounts support a crush, but not a romance they acted on.

Plummer’s attraction began before the film

At a 2015 anniversary appearance, Plummer recalled that he had “sort of fell in love with her” while watching Andrews play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. His reported attraction therefore predated The Sound of Music, rather than beginning only when they met on its set. Vanity Fair covered the anniversary appearance.

The circumstances on set—and the friendship afterward

ABC News’s account described Andrews as lonely and busy during filming, with her young daughter Emma with her, while Plummer was navigating a separation and spending nights out. Those details provide context for their recollections; they do not establish why either person did or did not pursue a relationship.

Their later comments also reflected affection and professional respect. Andrews said they became best friends. At the anniversary appearance, she praised Plummer’s performance for giving the film an “astringency”; he recalled deliberately behaving badly because he did not want to seem like a “sissy.” Vanity Fair described them as longtime friends at the celebration.

What the story does—and does not—establish

The most accurate version is straightforward: both stars later acknowledged a crush, and neither described them as having dated. Plummer’s playful “huge smashing affair” remark is not evidence that one happened. Their own words distinguish the attraction from the friendship they maintained.
