John Amos died on August 21, 2024, but his death was not publicly announced until October 1. In a report published October 4, publicist Belinda Foster said Amos had requested the delay because he feared his daughter Shannon might turn his death and interment into a “circus.” That explanation is Foster’s account of his wishes—not a direct, independently verified statement from Amos.
What was reported about the delayed announcement?
Yahoo’s October 4, 2024, account of a People exclusive quoted Foster saying Amos had been concerned that Shannon might make his death and interment a “circus,” and that he requested the delay in telling her and the public. The report attributes the explanation to Foster. The available account does not include a recording, letter, or direct statement from Amos confirming the request. That distinction matters: the reported request is one explanation for the gap, not a documented finding that settles why the announcement came later or what happened within the family.

How did Shannon Amos say she found out?
In a statement quoted by TMZ on October 2, Shannon said she and her family learned about her father’s death through media reports. She described being devastated and having unanswered questions. Her account differs from Foster’s reported explanation for the delay: Shannon spoke about how the news reached her, while Foster attributed the delay to Amos’s alleged wishes.

What did relatives and associates say about the circumstances?
In Extra’s October 3 interview, Amos’s brother Leslie Franklin, granddaughter Quiera Williams, goddaughter Amy Goudy, and business manager Paul Baldessare described being surprised or concerned about the circumstances surrounding his final period. Williams said she learned of his death with everyone else and felt she had lost a chance to speak with him. These reactions are relevant context, but they do not establish that anyone caused, concealed, or mishandled his death.
Extra also reported that Amos had accused Shannon of elder abuse in a video posted by K.C. Amos; both siblings denied the claims. Extra said the LAPD investigation into K.C. Amos had reportedly closed without charges. These allegations and the reported status of that investigation should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing.

What does the death-certificate reporting establish?
TMZ said the certificate it obtained listed August 21 as the date of death, congestive heart failure as the cause, August 30 as the cremation date, and no autopsy. Those details concern the recorded cause and timeline as reported by TMZ; they do not explain the family disagreement or independently verify Foster’s account of Amos’s request.
