Her account is a personal recollection, not proof of a haunting. A documented interview with former security guard Sam Thompson establishes his role and presence at Graceland on the day Presley died, but does not corroborate Rooks’s post-death experiences.
What happened at Graceland after Elvis Presley died?
Elvis Presley Enterprises says Presley died at Graceland in Memphis on August 16, 1977, aged 42, and lists heart failure as the cause. Graceland’s Elvis FAQ provides those details.
Nancy Rooks said she had begun working at Graceland in May 1967 as Presley’s cook and maid. She was there on the day he died and continued working for the family afterward, according to interviews with her. In that setting, she described incidents she found difficult to explain.
What did Nancy Rooks say she experienced?
Rooks recalled sitting at a table when a door slammed hard, though she had not seen it close. She said she went outside and asked a guard to search the house. She interpreted the event as Elvis’s anger about the house opening to the public, saying, “That was Elvis.” That was Rooks’s conclusion; the account does not independently establish what caused the door to slam.

She also described lights flashing on and off while she cleaned the trophy room at night. On another occasion, she said, she lay down there to nap and felt someone shake her foot. She saw no one and attributed the touch to “Mr. Elvis.”
In the same interview, Rooks recounted seeing what she described as an entity-like form come from the ceiling and land on a bed while she and Elvis’s grandmother were in the room. Rooks said the grandmother wondered whether it was Gladys Presley. These are memories and interpretations reported by Rooks, not verified sightings.

Rooks’s interviews identify her as a longtime household employee and author of Inside Graceland, as well as co-author of The Presley Family Cookbook. That background gives context to her account, but her books and recollections are not independent confirmation of a supernatural explanation. What did Graceland’s security team report?
The title’s reference to a “security team” needs qualification. An interview with Sam Thompson identifies him as a Graceland security guard and one of Presley’s bodyguards in the 1970s, later a security chief. Thompson recounted being at Graceland on the day Presley died and securing the location. His account does not report the specific post-death incidents Rooks described.

Thompson’s account is available in this 2020 interview.
How does Graceland’s timeline fit Rooks’s account?
Graceland’s official history says construction began in 1939, Presley bought the house in March 1957, and Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Moore named it after Mrs. Moore’s aunt, Grace Toof. The estate’s history sets out those details.

After Presley’s death, mourners gathered outside the property. Graceland opened to tours in 1982, and Presley is buried on the grounds, according to the Associated Press account of the estate’s history. Rooks’s story concerns her years working in the house between Presley’s death and its public opening, as well as her interpretation of the events she recalled.

No. The evidence presented here establishes that Rooks told stories about unsettling events and understood some of them as Elvis’s presence. It does not establish a supernatural cause. Thompson’s interview offers context about a member of Graceland’s security staff and the day Presley died, but it does not verify Rooks’s reported experiences. The careful distinction is between what Rooks said she experienced and what can be independently confirmed.
