Yes. Francis Ford Coppola gave Megalopolis five stars in his first Letterboxd diary entry, according to reports published September 18 and 19, 2024. The entry was a rating, not a conventional written review, and Coppola did not explain his score there.
What Coppola posted on Letterboxd
SFGATE reported on September 18, 2024, that Coppola had recently joined Letterboxd and used his first diary entry to rate Megalopolis five stars. SFGATE’s report described the entry as a rating; it does not establish that Coppola published a longer review alongside it. ABC Audio likewise reported the five-star rating the next day and said he did not elaborate in the entry. ABC Audio’s account corroborates that distinction.

What he did—and did not—say about the film
Coppola’s reason for awarding the film five stars is not stated in the diary entry described by the reports. SFGATE separately quoted his description of Megalopolis from the introduction to a Letterboxd list of films that inspired it: “a dive into a world that exists more than it should. Of course, it’s about loyalty, but ultimately in the end it’s a vision of hope.” That is his description in the list introduction, not text accompanying the rating.
Why the rating drew attention
The post appeared shortly before Megalopolis’ U.S. theatrical opening, which both reports said was scheduled for September 27, 2024. The film had already prompted sharply divided reactions. Letterboxd’s retrospective on Cannes 2024 described early responses on the platform as divisive and called the film a passion project more than 40 years in the making. Letterboxd’s Cannes retrospective also noted that the film’s interactive premiere event really took place.

As a separate snapshot of audience activity, SFGATE reported that Letterboxd’s weighted score for Megalopolis was 2.9 stars on September 18, 2024. That is a dated figure, not a statement of the film’s current score. Coppola’s individual five-star rating and the platform’s aggregate measure reflect different things.

The five-star diary entry was not the trailer controversy. In August 2024, Lionsgate apologized for and withdrew a Megalopolis trailer that included fabricated quotations attributed to critics, including Roger Ebert and Pauline Kael, as reported by SFGATE and ABC Audio. ABC Audio reported that Coppola said he did not know how the fake reviews, possibly AI-generated, ended up in the trailer. The reports do not indicate that he wrote or approved the fabricated quotes.
