Original singer Lou Gramm joined Kelly Clarkson for “I Want to Know What Love Is.” The night also featured the touring group with Demi Lovato and Slash, followed by Sammy Hagar singing “Hot Blooded.” Original guitarist Mick Jones was absent, according to the Associated Press’s account of the ceremony.
What happened at Foreigner’s induction?
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame lists Foreigner in its 2024 induction class. At the ceremony, the performances brought together the band’s touring lineup, guest artists and one prominent former member.
The Associated Press reported the sequence this way:
- The touring Foreigner lineup performed “Feels Like the First Time” with Demi Lovato and Slash.
- Sammy Hagar took lead vocals on “Hot Blooded.”
- Kelly Clarkson performed “I Want to Know What Love Is,” and original singer Lou Gramm joined her onstage.
That last appearance was the reunion moment: Gramm returned to perform with the event’s artists, but the original lineup did not reunite as a band. AP reported that Hagar observed the touring group had no original members.

Which original members were there?
Lou Gramm, Foreigner’s original lead singer, joined Clarkson for the band’s best-known ballad. Mick Jones, the original guitarist, did not perform at the ceremony. AP reported that Jones was sidelined in New York by Parkinson’s disease at the time.
The Hall’s Foreigner profile lists seven members whose signatures appear on the band’s induction plaque, including Jones. The plaque recognition reflects the band’s wider history; it does not mean all those members appeared together onstage that night.

Why did the set span rock anthems and a ballad?
Foreigner’s catalog made room for both high-energy rock and a large-scale ballad. The Hall describes the band’s sound as evolving from guitar-led 1970s rock toward more keyboards, layered synthesizers and balladry in the 1980s. Its profile highlights “Feels Like the First Time,” “Hot Blooded,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.”
The Hall associates “Juke Box Hero” with 4, released in 1981; its profile displays the song with a 1982 date. The song’s displayed year should not be confused with the album’s release year.

How successful was Foreigner?
In its 2024 induction feature, the Associated Press reported that Foreigner had nine Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and six Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. AP also noted that “4” spent 10 weeks at No. 1 in 1981. These are figures reported by AP, rather than a separate review here of Billboard’s underlying chart records.
The band’s induction followed a long wait. Founding keyboardist Al Greenwood told AP, “It’s just been a long wait and I know that we’ve done enough in our career to warrant induction.” Bassist Rick Wills reflected on the songs’ staying power: “We weren’t the best looking band in the world. We weren’t the most dress-conscious band in the world. But Mick and Lou came up with some very, very strong songs and that’s what’s kept it going.”
