What Musk’s video claimed—and what was reported
On January 13, 2025, Gizmodo reported that Elon Musk shared a video whose narrator said Starlink restored communication and saved thousands of lives during the fires. The narrator also claimed that people could watch live fire coverage because Musk donated terminals to Los Angeles. That is the video’s account, not an independently established outcome. Gizmodo’s report documents the claim and the reported deployment.
Musk described using Cybertrucks as mobile base stations to power Starlink terminals in areas of Los Angeles without connectivity. Gizmodo reported that eight Cybertrucks were sent to local police stations, attributing that figure to Tesla. This indicates a reported effort to provide connectivity; it does not establish how many people used the service or whether it led to a particular rescue.
Is there evidence that Starlink saved thousands of lives?
The reporting reviewed does not name people rescued because of the terminals, give an incident-by-incident count, or cite an independent assessment supporting the video’s “thousands” figure. The claim is therefore unsubstantiated by the available reporting. That does not establish that nobody benefited from the connectivity; it means the specific lives-saved total has not been verified by the sources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It helps to separate three different levels of evidence:
- Equipment deployment: reporting describes Starlink terminals and Cybertrucks being sent to support connectivity.
- Actual use: the available accounts provide limited information about agency receipt or use, but do not quantify use by responders or residents.
- Documented outcomes: the sources provide no verified count of lives saved or specific rescues attributable to the terminals.
Why the Cal Fire device dispute is a separate issue
A different social-media claim alleged that California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered Cal Fire to return Starlink devices. PolitiFact reported that Cal Fire did not accept the units because department policy prohibited accepting gifts; the Los Angeles County Fire Department, by contrast, said it received Starlink units. Cal Fire spokesperson Thomas Shoots told PolitiFact: “Gavin Newsom did not direct the removal of Elon Musk from the incident command post, nor did he order Cal Fire employees to return Starlink devices.”

That agency-policy dispute does not verify or disprove the video’s separate claim about lives saved. The two questions have different evidence: whether particular fire departments accepted devices, and whether the deployment produced a measurable rescue total. PolitiFact’s January 29, 2025 fact-check addresses the claim about Newsom and device returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can—and cannot—be concluded
The available reporting supports that connectivity equipment was dispatched and that the Los Angeles County Fire Department said it received Starlink units. It does not identify a specific terminal model, measure the number of people served, or establish a lives-saved figure. The accurate conclusion is that the “thousands of lives” claim remains unsupported by the reporting, not that the response had no value.
