USC’s official transcript of the May 17, 2013 ceremony identifies Jimmy Iovine as the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. The university’s official commencement program lists Iovine among six honorary-degree recipients and does not identify Dr. Dre as a recipient.

Andre Young, known as Dr. Dre, was at the ceremony. The transcript says he joined Iovine onstage, briefly addressed the crowd, and joined him in announcing the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy of Technology, Arts and the Business of Innovation at USC. His presence alongside Iovine is not evidence that he received Iovine’s degree.
Why might people think Dre received a doctorate?
The ceremony played on Dre’s stage name. Iovine introduced him with a joke asking the “real Dr. Dre” to join him onstage. Dre then congratulated Iovine, saying, “First I would like to say congratulations to Dr. Jimmy Iovine. I like the way that sounds.” In context, the remarks refer to Iovine’s honorary degree and Dre’s familiar name; neither establishes an academic doctorate for Dre.

What is the difference between an earned PhD and an honorary doctorate?
An earned PhD is an academic credential awarded after completing a doctoral program and its requirements. An honorary degree is recognition conferred by a university; it is not the same as completing a PhD program. USC describes honorary degrees as recognition for scholarly, professional, or creative achievement; leadership, service, or influence; philanthropy; and contributions that exemplify the university’s ideals.
USC says honorary-degree nominees are reviewed by its Honorary Degrees Committee and Board of Trustees, with the president selecting the final honorees. That explains the university’s general process, not a degree awarded to Dre.

What can the records establish about Dre’s education?
The USC transcript and program establish that Iovine—not Dre—received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the 2013 commencement, and that Dre appeared at the event. A published recipient list from Whittier College also does not name Dr. Dre or Andre Young. These sources do not amount to a complete degree history across every institution, so they cannot establish that Dre never received any degree elsewhere. They also do not establish how Young chose the stage name “Dr. Dre.”
