No cited source establishes that Donald Trump spent more time in detention than anyone else at New York Military Academy (NYMA). The “DT” detention story comes from a former classmate’s recollection of their earlier grade-school years at Kew-Forest School—and he said Trump got more detentions than “most,” not more than everyone.
Where the “DT” detention story comes from
NPR reported that Trump and Paul Onish were classmates at Kew-Forest School in Queens and often got into trouble. Onish recalled: “We used to refer to our detention as a ‘DT’ — a ‘Donny Trump’ — because he got more of them than most other people in the class.” NPR’s 2015 report attributes that account to Onish and places it in their grade-school years.
That is a former classmate’s retrospective anecdote, not a school tally. “More than most” does not mean “more than anyone,” and the account does not quantify time spent in detention. It should not be reassigned to NYMA.
What is established about Trump’s time at NYMA
The Donald J. Trump Presidential Library’s biography confirms that Trump attended New York Military Academy. NPR reports that he went there before eighth grade and spent five years at the academy. The Washington Post reported that his NYMA education began in 1959, when he was 13; the academy was founded in 1889. Those dates and duration describe his attendance, not detention.

What accounts of his academy years do—and do not—show
The Washington Post described disagreement over a senior-year leadership assignment. Trump said the change was a promotion based on his performance, saying, “I had total control over the cadets.” Former cadets connected the transfer to a hazing complaint and concerns about supervision. These are competing accounts of the assignment, not evidence of a detention ranking.
The Post reported that school officials declined to comment and that Trump would not permit review of his academy records. The article does not say detention records were among the records withheld, and it gives no NYMA detention count. Its reporting therefore does not establish either a record or the nonexistence of records that might bear on one.

- Not established: That Trump spent more time in detention than any other NYMA cadet.
- Important distinction: A remembered comparison of detention frequency at grade school is not a measured total of detention time at a different school.
