Donald Trump wrote that he punched his music teacher in second grade. But the available transcript using the phrase “statutory rape” records a conversation between Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and former prosecutor Anne Bremner—not Trump. These are separate records, and the latter does not establish a Trump statement about statutory rape.
What did Trump say about his teacher?
In his 1987 book The Art of the Deal, Trump described punching his music teacher in second grade: “I punched my music teacher because I didn’t think he knew anything about music and I almost got expelled.” The Washington Post reproduced the passage in a November 13, 2016, article: The Washington Post’s account of Trump’s history of violence.
This is Trump’s first-person account in a book, not an independently confirmed event. The Post reported that the teacher’s family did not recall the incident; Trump’s friend Peter Brant also said he did not recall it or hearing Trump discuss it. Those recollections do not prove the punch did not happen, but the reporting does not independently corroborate it.
Did Trump call a teacher-student relationship statutory rape?
The located Fox News transcript is a 2006 discussion hosted by Bill O’Reilly, with former child-sex-crimes prosecutor Anne Bremner. O’Reilly discusses teacher-student cases and says, “It’s a statutory rape.” Trump is not speaking in that transcript. The phrase should not be attributed to him on the basis of this exchange. The transcript discusses the case of Debra LaFave. CNN’s March 21, 2006, transcript describes LaFave as a 23-year-old teacher and the student as a 14-year-old boy, and reports that she pleaded guilty to lewd and lascivious battery: CNN’s report on the LaFave case. That is the legal description reported for this case; “statutory rape” should not be treated as a universal charge name.
How the two records differ
| Record | Speaker and context | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Trump’s teacher anecdote | Trump, in his 1987 book The Art of the Deal | Trump wrote that he punched his music teacher. The Washington Post’s reporting says the teacher’s family and Peter Brant did not recall the incident; it does not independently establish that it happened. |
| Statutory-rape discussion | Bill O’Reilly and Anne Bremner, in a 2006 Fox News discussion | O’Reilly used the phrase while discussing teacher-student cases, including LaFave’s. The transcript does not show Trump speaking. |
The book anecdote and the Fox News discussion concern different events, speakers, and dates. Combining them into a single story—or treating O’Reilly’s words as Trump’s—would misstate what these records show.
