That result supports saying David outgrossed the Sydney Sweeney thriller that weekend. It does not show that audiences chose it because of religion, or rejected The Housemaid because of its sexual content.
How the two films ranked
The Numbers’ domestic chart for the weekend dated December 19, 2025, placed David second and The Housemaid third. “Domestic” here means the United States and Canada. The chart reported opening-weekend grosses of $22,000,554 for David and $19,010,430 for The Housemaid, a difference of $2,990,124. These are charted figures; Angel Studios’ contemporaneous release rounded David’s opening to $22 million.

All figures in the table are from The Numbers’ December 19, 2025 weekend chart. The chart also placed Avatar: Fire and Ash first at $89,160,860 and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants fourth at $15,611,344. So the two films in the headline were not competing for the top spot. Opening grosses were estimates subject to later reporting.
What kind of films were audiences choosing between?
David: an animated biblical musical
Angel Studios’ David retells the biblical story of David and Goliath as an animated musical, with music by Phil Wickham. The studio called the opening its best theatrical opening to that date and a record for a faith-based animated theatrical opening. Those are Angel’s own milestone claims, not independent measurements. In its December 21 release, updated December 22, the studio also reported an A CinemaScore and a 98% Rotten Tomatoes audience score at that time; these are dated audience measures, not box-office figures.

The Housemaid: an R-rated psychological thriller
The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, adapts Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. The Numbers lists its wide domestic release as December 19, 2025, its runtime as 131 minutes, and its rating as R for strong/bloody violence, sexual assault, sexual content, nudity, and language. The rating and content description establish what viewers were offered; they do not establish why anyone bought a ticket.
Does the result prove audiences chose God over sex?
No. The weekend chart establishes a ranking and reported revenue, not the beliefs or motives of ticket buyers. It does not show whether people chose David for its religious story, animation, music, family appeal, or another reason; nor whether people avoided The Housemaid because of its subject matter, rating, cast, or anything else. The Associated Press’ December 21, 2025 report identifies the two releases and their rounded opening figures, but the cited box-office reporting does not include a poll or survey measuring audience motivation.

Angel Studios’ Head of Theatrical, Brandon Purdie, said families were seeking values-driven films and that Angel Guild members embraced David. That is a studio representative’s promotional characterization, not evidence about all or most ticket buyers. The careful conclusion is narrower: on their opening weekend, David earned more than The Housemaid in the U.S. and Canada, despite opening in 103 more theaters.

The opening-weekend comparison answers who ranked higher at launch; it does not decide which film ultimately earned more. The Numbers’ title record lists The Housemaid’s domestic total as $126,432,462, substantially above its opening figure. That later total does not alter its third-place opening-weekend ranking. The Numbers lists a February 3, 2026 video release for the film; home-viewing formats and availability may vary over time.
