What happened to Brooklynn?
The series opens with the Nublar Six separated and grieving what appears to be Brooklynn’s death. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the group as dealing with a tragedy, while Amblin’s episode guide says the first episode finds them processing a devastating loss: Amblin’s episode guide and Netflix’s series synopsis.
That apparent loss is a deliberate misdirection. Brooklynn survived the attack, but she suffered a major arm injury. Showrunner Scott Kreamer has explained that the plan was for the characters to believe she had died even though she had not, and that the injury helped make the danger—and their belief—credible (Kreamer interview; interview with Scott Kreamer and Aaron Hammersley).
Why did her friends think she was dead?
The attack is presented as severe enough that Brooklynn’s friends have reason to think she did not survive. Kreamer said the creative team wanted the scene to establish that something serious had happened, rather than leave the impression that she escaped unharmed. Her partial loss of an arm makes the consequences tangible while allowing the later reveal that she lived.

What the series confirms—and what one recap adds
The creator interviews establish Brooklynn’s survival and serious arm injury. A secondary recap describes the attack as involving an Allosaurus and an Atrociraptor and says she lost her left hand; those specific details come from that recap, rather than the creator interviews summarized here (secondary recap).
