Both Dawes brothers were affected by the Eaton Fire in Altadena in January 2025, but the headline that both members’ homes were destroyed is not precise. Drummer Griffin Goldsmith lost his home. Singer-guitarist Taylor Goldsmith’s main house was reported still standing but unlivable; his home studio and equipment, garage, and back house were lost.
What happened to Griffin and Taylor Goldsmith’s homes?
| Brother | Reported loss |
|---|---|
| Griffin Goldsmith | His Altadena home was destroyed, according to the Los Angeles Times on January 6, 2026. In a CNN interview on January 10, 2025, Griffin also spoke about losing instruments and equipment. |
| Taylor Goldsmith | His main house remained standing but was unlivable, according to Mandy Moore’s account reproduced by the Los Angeles Times in January 2025. His home studio and equipment, garage, and back house were lost. |
The brothers’ losses should not be conflated: a destroyed studio is not the same as a destroyed primary residence. Their parents also lost their Altadena home, the Los Angeles Times reported in its 2026 retrospective.
How the brothers described the aftermath
Griffin and his wife, Kit, spoke with CNN shortly after the fire. Griffin described the loss of his instruments and equipment and the support he received from fellow musicians. He said, “I’m still a musician, even if I’m devoid of all my instruments.” His comments reflected the uncertainty he felt at that time; they do not establish his current rebuilding or housing plans.
ABC7 reported on February 5, 2025, that Griffin’s first child was born just over two weeks after the fire. The station also reported that the brothers’ parents had lost their Altadena home. In discussing relief activity, the brothers emphasized directing attention to other residents affected by the disaster.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the Eaton Fire killed 19 people and destroyed more than 9,000 structures. Those figures are the paper’s reporting in its January 6, 2026 retrospective.

What is known about rebuilding and housing?
The cited accounts establish the damage and the brothers’ relief work, but do not establish the Goldsmith family’s current insurance, rebuilding, or permanent housing arrangements. Griffin’s uncertainty in the January 2025 CNN interview is a contemporaneous account, not evidence of his plans in 2026.
