A field study on Milan’s metro found that passengers offered a seat to a woman simulating pregnancy more often when an experimenter dressed as Batman was also present. The result is striking, but it concerns one immediate act in one setting—not proof that Batman makes people kinder in general.
What the Batman study actually tested
Francesco Pagnini and colleagues reported the quasi-experimental field study in npj Mental Health Research on November 3, 2025. On Milan’s underground metro, a female experimenter simulating pregnancy boarded with an observer. In the experimental condition, another experimenter dressed as Batman entered through a different door, about three metres away. Batman and the woman did not interact, and the costume’s full upper-face mask was omitted for ethical reasons. Researchers recorded whether a seated passenger offered the woman a seat. Read the study.
The outcome was therefore specific: an observed offer of a seat to someone appearing pregnant. The researchers did not measure whether passengers became more generous in other situations, or whether any change lasted beyond that moment.
How often did passengers offer a seat?
Across 138 observation sessions, seat offers occurred more often when Batman was present. These percentages describe the study’s observation sessions, not the likelihood that any individual passenger will offer a seat in another setting.

| Condition | Observation sessions | Sessions with a seat offer |
|---|---|---|
| Batman present | 61 | 67.21% |
| Control | 77 | 37.66% |
The authors’ logistic model reported an odds ratio of 3.393, with p < 0.001. That is a statistical comparison within this study; it is not a guarantee that adding a costumed character will produce the same result elsewhere. The model explained 11.2% of the variance in seat offering and classified 64.5% of cases correctly, so the presence of Batman was not a complete explanation of what passengers did.
Did passengers notice Batman?
Among people who offered a seat in the Batman condition, 14—43.75%, or about 44%—said after the event that they had not seen Batman. No one in that condition directly attributed their gesture to him. In both conditions, most explanations focused on the woman’s apparent pregnancy; some people cited social norms, education, or safety.

Those responses make it plausible that some seat offers occurred without people reporting awareness of Batman. They do not establish that the character acted on passengers unconsciously: awareness was self-reported after the event, and the study did not demonstrate a specific mental mechanism.
Why might an unexpected character matter?
The authors discuss two broad possibilities. Batman may have disrupted the routine of a familiar commute, prompting passengers to pay more attention to their surroundings and to social cues. Alternatively, the character’s symbolic associations could have primed helping behavior. Other contextual effects may also have contributed.

Neither explanation was settled by the experiment. The authors note that close replications of social-priming effects have often failed to reproduce earlier findings, and they call for further research to distinguish the possible mechanisms. In an interview reported by Futurism, study lead author Francesco Pagnini described the result as similar to research linking present-moment awareness to prosociality, while characterizing situational interruptions as a possible route to similar effects. Those are interpretations, not evidence that the study proved a mindfulness or priming mechanism. Read Futurism’s report.
What the finding does—and does not—tell us
- It is an intriguing field result: researchers observed more seat offers in the Batman condition than in the control condition on the Milan metro.
- It is not a general test of kindness: the measured behavior was one immediate offer of a seat to a woman appearing pregnant.
- It does not establish a lasting effect: the study did not track passengers’ later behavior.
- It does not show that Batman is uniquely effective: the authors say it is unclear whether the result would occur with other unexpected figures.
- It does not settle what caused the difference: attention disruption, symbolic priming, and other explanations remain possibilities.
The study took place on one city’s transit system and involved one character and one helping behavior. It cannot establish that the effect generalizes to other populations, settings, characters, or forms of help. The researchers suggest testing different figures, disruptions, emotional tones, and environments, including controlled laboratory studies. They also caution that observers’ estimates of passengers’ age and sex may be inaccurate; those demographic observations should be treated as descriptive, not definitive.
