No confirmed reveal: the much-discussed image is a visual comparison fans made between Professor Hulk holding wreckage in Avengers: Endgame and Hulk holding up a mountain in a Secret Wars comic. It may suggest an allusion, but the available reporting does not establish that Marvel planted it to reveal the story of Avengers: Doomsday, the film once commonly called “Avengers 5.”
What is the Endgame Easter egg theory?
In a July 9, 2020 report, The Independent described a Reddit post by user u/wafflespls. The post placed two images side by side: Professor Hulk holding up wreckage from Avengers headquarters in Endgame, and Hulk holding a mountain in a panel from a Secret Wars comic. Its caption asked, “This can’t be a coincidence, right?”
The resemblance is the basis of the theory. The Independent relayed Inverse’s explanation that the image seemed to point toward Secret Wars. That makes it a plausible fan interpretation, not proof that the filmmakers intended the shot as a plot clue.
Does the image confirm Avengers: Doomsday’s plot?
No. The cited 2020 report presents the connection as a fan theory sourced to an image comparison; it does not report Marvel or the filmmakers confirming that this particular moment was an intentional hint. A visual resemblance can invite speculation, but by itself it cannot establish either the creators’ intent or a later film’s plot.

The article also noted that Joe and Anthony Russo had previously said they would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe only if they could direct an adaptation of Secret Wars. That is context for why the theory caught fans’ attention, not confirmation that the Endgame image encoded a future story.
What has changed since the “Avengers 5” theory?
The fifth Avengers film is now titled Avengers: Doomsday in current official coverage. In a D23 article dated September 29 and updated October 5, 2026, Anthony Russo described Endgame as an ending: “When we made that film, we were so specifically committed to that movie as an ending of stories, not a beginning of new stories.” He also said that, years later, as the filmmakers worked out a path forward that became Doomsday, they felt they needed to pick up the story where they had left it in Endgame.
That later creative connection makes it reasonable to revisit theories about Endgame. It still does not authenticate this particular Hulk image as a deliberate forecast. D23’s report describes footage in which Doctor Doom collects Bruce Banner for unknown reasons and TVA characters witness multiverses collapsing; the cause of that catastrophe remains a mystery in the reported footage.

The title and schedule changed after earlier announcements. TheWrap reported in July 2024 that the film had been renamed Avengers: Doomsday, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing and Stephen McFeely writing. Its then-planned May 2026 release window is no longer current: D23’s later coverage gives the release date as December 18.

Likewise, Disney’s March 2024 investor presentation listed “Avengers 5” for May 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars for May 2027. Those dates document an earlier schedule, not the current release timing reported by D23.
