Not according to the closest available pre-finale evidence: TVLine’s reader polls showed Jamal Roberts, John Foster and Breanna Nix clustered near the top, often just one or two percentage points apart. That was a close race among TVLine readers—not proof that American Idol fans as a whole had settled on one winner. Roberts ultimately won the Season 23 finale on May 18, 2025.
Who were the Season 23 finalists?
The final three were Jamal Roberts, John Foster and Breanna Nix. Before the May 18, 2025 finale, each remained a plausible winner; the available poll reporting did not establish that one had a decisive lead.
Did fans have a clear winner in mind?
TVLine’s pre-finale report described its readers’ polls as close, with all three finalists repeatedly near the top and often separated by only one or two percentage points. Those figures describe TVLine readers who participated in its polls, not a representative survey of every American Idol viewer, and they do not establish comparative vote shares for the show.
Showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick also described the outcome as open: “In the case of other seasons, there might be more of a clear frontrunner, but not this time. It’s anyone’s game, and that to me is a win at the end of a season.” (TVLine, May 17, 2025)

Who won American Idol Season 23?
Jamal Roberts won the finale on May 18, 2025. ABC News identified Roberts as a 27-year-old physical education teacher from Meridian, Mississippi; John Foster and Breanna Nix finished as the other finalists. (ABC News, May 19, 2025)
What does the finale vote total tell us?
Disney/ABC reported more than 26 million votes for the finalists in the finale, calling it a new voting record on ABC. The figure is a count of votes, not unique voters, and it does not show that Roberts—or any finalist—was the clear fan favorite before the finale. (Disney/ABC Press, May 20, 2025)

How could viewers vote?
ABC’s voting help page lists website, SMS and comments on pinned official voting posts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok as methods while voting is open. Eligibility differs by method: web voting is for viewers 16 or older in the United States, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands; social voting requires voters to be at least 18 and in the United States. Text voting depends on supported U.S. wireless carriers, and message or data rates may apply. Rules can change, so check ABC’s current guidance for a future season. (ABC Support)
