Yes—Akon has said that his brother Abou “Bu” Thiam stood in for him at some concerts when he was overbooked. He later said his other brother, Omar Thiam, also performed shows as him, sometimes without Akon knowing. The accounts come from Akon’s interviews; they do not establish a complete, independently verified list of performances.
What Akon said about Bu Thiam
In an interview on The Morning Hustle, reported by Complex in October 2022, Akon said he was turning down paid bookings because he could not fit them all into his schedule. He said he sent Bu to perform at a Hot 97-hosted event, describing the arrangement plainly: “Bu was my double. He was my double.” Complex’s account of the interview also reports Akon saying Bu could not sing and that the stand-in performed to playback rather than singing the full show live.

Akon also said, “If you saw Abou in one place and you saw me, you couldn’t tell the difference.” That is Akon’s description of the resemblance, not independent confirmation of which audiences saw which brother.
How Omar Thiam’s role was different
In later interviews, Akon described both brothers taking shows. Complex’s 2025 account of his appearance on the Bootleg Kev Podcast says Bu filled in for him, while Omar sometimes booked and performed shows without telling Akon. Read Complex’s report.

#1 Best Overall
In a June 2026 appearance on Jim Jones’s Artist 2 Artist podcast, Akon again described the workload becoming overwhelming, with Bu taking some gigs and Omar taking others—sometimes without Akon’s knowledge. He recalled Foxy Brown showing him a flyer for a South Carolina show he said he had not booked: “I don’t have no concert in no South Carolina,” he said, according to Complex’s report. Hot 97 also covered the anecdote in its June 2026 write-up, which reports the same podcast appearance rather than independently confirming the concerts.

The honest answer depends on the show. Akon’s account is that Bu was an arranged stand-in for some bookings he could not personally cover, while Omar sometimes accepted or performed shows without Akon knowing. The reports describe the stand-ins lip-syncing to playback; they do not establish that either brother delivered Akon’s full live vocal performance.
What is—and is not—confirmed
The available reporting supports Akon’s public account that his brothers stood in at some shows. It does not provide a full concert list, dates and venues, a verified total, or a promoter-by-promoter documentary record. So it is fair to say the practice happened according to Akon, but not to claim a precise number of concerts or identify every audience that may have seen a stand-in.
