At her February 2025 jersey-retirement ceremony at the University of South Carolina, Wilson thanked her “favorite Olympian from out of town,” a reference to Bam Adebayo, who was seated courtside, according to The Sporting News. Later profiles and interviews made the relationship explicit in Wilson’s own words.
What did A’ja Wilson say at South Carolina?
During the February 2025 ceremony retiring her jersey at the University of South Carolina, Wilson thanked those who had supported her and singled out her “favorite Olympian from out of town.” Adebayo, a Miami Heat player and fellow Olympic athlete, was there courtside. The Sporting News interpreted the line as a subtle confirmation of their romance.
The remark acknowledged him without directly labeling their relationship. It is best understood as a public hint—not the couple’s first definitive statement and not a fresh announcement.
How long have Wilson and Adebayo been together?
In its 2025 profile of Wilson, TIME reported that they had been dating for about four years and first connected at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The profile described athletes spending time together in a hotel lounge amid COVID restrictions. Adebayo said their relationship began with friendship: “The best thing about our relationship, we started out as great friends.” TIME’s wording supports an approximate timeline, not an exact start date.

The distinction is between the ceremony’s indirect acknowledgment and the couple’s later direct comments. Wilson’s “favorite Olympian” line did not spell out that they were dating; the context and Adebayo’s presence made its meaning apparent to the coverage. TIME’s 2025 account supplied a relationship timeline, while Vogue and ELLE later reported Wilson and Adebayo speaking openly about their love and their on-camera appearance together.
