Grindr CEO George Arison later confirmed a significant spike in Milwaukee usage during the convention, but said it did not cause the app to crash. The real usage increase does not make the original quote real.
Where the “Grindr Super Bowl” claim came from
On July 15, 2024, the satirical account The Halfway Post published a post purporting to quote a Grindr executive describing the RNC as “basically Grindr’s Super Bowl.” PolitiFact found no credible report of a Grindr executive making that statement and identified the post as satire. It rated the claim that an executive had said it false. PolitiFact’s fact-check
On July 17, former congressman George Santos repeated the claim in a video posted to X, saying, as quoted by PolitiFact, “So, Grindr executives are calling the RNC the ‘Grindr Super Bowl,’” Santos said he was openly gay and a conservative Republican, urged gay Republicans to come out, and joked that the app was already outing them through its “hits.” PinkNews reported on Santos’s comments and the satire’s origin.
PolitiFact reported that The Halfway Post’s original post had received more than 50 million views by July 19, 2024. That is a dated report of the post’s reach at the time, not a current view count. PolitiFact’s report on the post’s reach

Did Grindr usage actually increase during the 2024 RNC?
Yes. In a July 7, 2025 interview with UnHerd, Grindr CEO George Arison acknowledged a “significant spike in usage” in Milwaukee during the convention. The reported account does not give a verified percentage, so the scale should not be expressed as a specific number. UnHerd’s interview with George Arison
This later confirmation is separate from the false executive quote: a real increase in app activity does not establish that a Grindr executive described the RNC as the app’s “Super Bowl.” Nor does activity near the convention establish that users were attendees, identify their sexual orientation or politics, or show what any particular person did.

Did Grindr crash because of the convention?
Arison dismissed rumors that the convention-related traffic caused the app’s servers to crash. The on-record account does not establish a traffic-caused outage. Reports or discussion of service problems should not be treated as confirmation that the spike brought Grindr down. UnHerd’s interview with Arison

The RNC-related joke echoed a report from the 2016 convention in Cleveland. Futurism reported that a Grindr representative said more than a thousand men used the app near Quicken Loans Arena during that RNC. Futurism separately estimated that this was roughly five percent of an estimated 20,000 convention attendees. The user count was attributed to a company representative; the percentage was the outlet’s calculation, not a Grindr statistic. Neither figure describes Milwaukee in 2024. Futurism’s 2016 report
