The recognition was for playing Timothy Robicheaux, an amnesiac character on Days of Our Lives. Van Dyke went on to win the award that June.
What was Dick Van Dyke nominated for?
The Associated Press reported on April 19, 2024, that Van Dyke had been nominated in the guest-performer category for a daytime drama series. His nominated performance was as Timothy Robicheaux on Peacock’s Days of Our Lives. The character was an amnesiac, and the part brought Van Dyke into the daytime drama acting awards.
At the time, AP described him as the oldest Daytime Emmy nominee. That record claim belongs to the 2024 nomination moment; it should not be confused with the separate record for oldest winner.
From nomination to award win
At the 51st Daytime Emmy Awards on June 7, 2024, Van Dyke won the guest-performer award at age 98, according to the Associated Press. Onstage, he joked, “I don’t believe this. I feel like a spy from nighttime television,” as reported by Entertainment Tonight.

In the same ET interview, when told he was the oldest nominee, Van Dyke replied, “Am I really the oldest? I didn’t know I was the oldest,” then added, “I’ll be darn. I think I’m the last of my generation, really. I’m 98. I have almost all my marbles. I can’t remember what I had for breakfast.” He also said of the cast, “You guys treated me so nicely. I had such a wonderful time.”
How the age record changed
Van Dyke’s 2024 nomination was historic, and his win made him the oldest Daytime Emmy winner at that point. That winner record did not remain his: the Associated Press reported that 99-year-old David Attenborough surpassed it when he won in October 2025. The distinction is important: Van Dyke was the oldest nominee at the time of his 2024 nomination, while Attenborough now holds the reported oldest-winner milestone.

How Van Dyke got the role
In a June 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Van Dyke recalled that Days of Our Lives actor Drake Hogestyn, who went to the same gym, suggested he appear on the show. As reported by CBS News, Van Dyke said, “I said I’d love to,” and later described how the opportunity grew: “But look, it snowballed into this [nomination].”
The Emmy special was a separate award entry
Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic was a separate television special, not the performance for which Van Dyke received his acting nomination. The Television Academy’s awards record lists the special as the 2024 winner for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), as well as a nominee for production design and choreography. Those honors are distinct from Van Dyke’s guest-performer nomination and win for Days of Our Lives.

A milestone in a long television career
The Daytime Emmy marked a new kind of recognition in Van Dyke’s career: an award for a daytime drama performance at 98. The Associated Press noted in 2024 that he had already won four Primetime Emmys, including three for The Dick Van Dyke Show. The 2024 nomination connected that earlier television legacy with a late-career guest role on a long-running soap opera.
