What happened to Diane Keaton?
Keaton died on October 11, 2025, in California, at age 79, according to the Associated Press and ABC News. ABC’s initial report said a cause was not immediately available. On October 15, the Los Angeles Times reported that her family had identified pneumonia as the cause; The Guardian later relayed the same family statement.
The timing matters: pneumonia was disclosed after the initial announcement, not in the first reports of her death. The cause is attributed to her family as reported by those outlets.
What was Diane Keaton known for?
Keaton’s screen career crossed genres and generations. She first became widely identified with Kay Adams, the character she played in The Godfather films. Paramount’s official film page confirms her role as Kay Adams in The Godfather. She later played the mother of the bride in Father of the Bride, a newly single woman in The First Wives Club, and a playwright in Something’s Gotta Give.
